Both of these composers, of mixed race and from working-class backgrounds, held prominent positions (choirmaster, organist, conductor) in the major religious institutions of their time: the cathedral of Rio de Janeiro for one, the tertiary orders of Carmel de Diamantina and Ouro Preto for the other. Their music, written for the liturgy and major festivals, bears the imprint of a language that was resolutely modern for its era. The Elegia Brasilis program aims to rescue this repertoire from European oblivion and ignorance, and questions a little-known reality: one where Afro-descendant composers, in a colonial and slave-owning country, were able to attain high functions and leave a strong musical imprint there. The program proposes to create a dialogue between these two voices—that of the capital, Rio, and that of the lands of gold and diamonds of Minas Gerais—centered around the major forms of funeral and penitential music.Mon 2 Nov · 20:30–21:45Église Notre-Dame des Victoires au Sablon · Brusselsfrom €10 FRAGMENTS D’UN PARCOURS AMOUREUXCinemaFRAGMENTS D’UN PARCOURS AMOUREUXSince the age of 16, Chloé Barreau has filmed her love affairs between Paris and Rome. She first came to the attention of the wider public on YouTube thanks to her vocal rendition of ‘Giant Steps’ (one of the most virtuosic solos in jazz history), performed with breathtaking mastery, and has since released a string of albums. She has won over critics in both France and the United States, where the prestigious New York-based label Sunnyside offered her the chance to record her debut album exactly ten years ago. What started as informal jam sessions gradually grew into a band with one mission: to share the energy, swing, and beauty of this music genre with as many people as possible. Inspired by artists such as Django Reinhardt, Stéphane Grappelli, Jean Sablon, Billie Holiday, and The Mills Brothers, Pistache brings these timeless songs to life in their own style. With close vocal harmonies, a six-string violin, and an easy-going, intimate stage presence, they continue to explore their own sound while staying true to the tradition of jazz manouche. The members of Pistache have performed at festivals including March Manouche, Nuremberg Guitar Festival, Birmingham Jazzfest, Breda Jazz, Dokter Jazz, and Django Amsterdam, and have collaborated with renowned musicians such as Tcha Limberger, Fapy Lafertin, and Robin Nolan. With guitar, bass, drums and keyboards, the band explores the different facets of Green’s music, from blues-driven hard bop to Latin jazz, soul and funk. The repertoire combines some of Green’s own compositions — including *Blues for Willarene*, *Grant’s Tune*, *Jean De Fleur*, *Idle Moments*, *Matador* and *Solid* — with tunes that became part of his unmistakable musical universe. Rather than aiming to recreate the original recordings note for note, the quartet takes Green’s music as a starting point for a lively, groove-oriented performance, with plenty of room for improvisation and interaction between the musicians. The programme follows a musical journey through Green’s career, moving from the swinging, blues-based language of his early Blue Note recordings towards the Latin and funky sounds of his later work. A tribute to a guitarist whose warm tone, deep groove and unmistakably bluesy phrasing continue to inspire generations of musicians.Fri 6 Nov · 20:00Sounds Jazz Club · Brusselsfrom €9 Michel Mainil / Greg Houben Reunion 5tetMusicMichel Mainil / Greg Houben Reunion 5tetTwo leading figures of Belgian jazz, Michel Mainil and Greg Houben, reunite on the Music Village stage for a moment of pure musical delight. Beyond these two giants, he has collaborated with a countless number of major figures in jazz and has performed in the most prestigious clubs and venues across the globe. A key figure in New York’s jazz community (he notably founded and ran ‘Zeb’s’, a renowned venue for creativity and performance, from 2009 to 2016), he is always keen to play with newcomers and to take on the role of an old-school mentor. It was during various trips to New York that Armando Luongo had the opportunity to play with Saul. The Italian drummer, a mainstay of the Brussels jazz scene for many years, is therefore taking advantage of the guitarist’s visit to invite him to join him for a special quartet concert at Toots. A rare opportunity to see a true guardian of the New York jazz scene in the intimate setting of our Brussels club!Sat 7 Nov · 19:30Toots Jazz Club · Brussels Pavel KolesnikovMusicPavel KolesnikovFrédéric Chopin's most defining works might well be the 21 Nocturnes he composed between 1827 and 1846. This is an absolutely unique opportunity in Belgium to see, just a few metres from your table, one of the most innovative and fascinating drummers and composers of our time. A true icon of the New York scene, Ari Hoenig has literally revolutionised the way his instrument is played. Far from merely keeping time at the back of the stage, he elevates the drum kit to the status of a profoundly melodic instrument. Juggling complex polyrhythms and a telepathic rapport with his fellow musicians, he creates music that is intense, cinematic and always full of surprises. His impressive CV is simply mind-boggling: since his early days, he has lent his genius to the biggest names in the world of jazz. Joshua Redman, Chris Potter, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Mike Stern, Kenny Werner and Jean-Michel Pilc… they’ve all called upon his rhythmic magic (he has, in fact, appeared on over 120 albums as a sideman!). To see an artist of this calibre – an internationally acclaimed musician and lecturer at New York’s most prestigious universities – perform in a club of our size is an incredible opportunity that no jazz lover should miss. Please note: For such a rare event, our small venue will fill up very quickly. No classical recitation, but music in which the words become lyrics for melodies that can be fragile and intimate, yet also powerful and compelling. Love, desire, doubt and the passing of time sound remarkably close, even more than 400 years later. Together with Dominique Vantomme on keyboards & electronics and Jean-François Assy on cello & electronics, Caroll creates a rich and expressive sound world where voice, piano, cello and electronics meet. It blew my mind. I’d come from a rock background – the Stones, Prince… and then, suddenly, Miles Davis. Nearly forty years later, TUTU has come back to haunt me. With a line-up of six musicians, the project revisits this electric and fiercely modern period in Miles Davis’s career, using TUTU as a starting point and Marcus Miller as a guiding light. Here, there’s no question of reproducing the album note for note. Instead, we rediscover the spirit of Miles’s live performances: a riff, a groove, a cue… and the music can shift at any moment. TUTU is jazz that draws on funk, rock and electronic music. It’s tense, free and physical music, where listening and the groove are paramount. It is, in fact, this open-mindedness that led him to settle in Brooklyn some fifteen years ago, where he has established himself as a firm fixture and key figure on New York’s vibrant scene. His quartet promises to set the stage alight for an exceptional evening: he is joined by the exceptionally talented drummer Savannah Harris, the brilliant Godwin Louis — undoubtedly one of the world’s finest saxophonists today, according to our artistic director — and the young piano prodigy Esteban Castro, aged just 24. A masterful performance not to be missed. Please note: there will be just one double set, so tickets are very limited!Thu 5 Nov · 20:30Toots Jazz Club · Brussels SPECIAL LATE SESSION WITH JOACHIM CAFFONNETTEMusicSPECIAL LATE SESSION WITH JOACHIM CAFFONNETTEAfter the weekend concerts, come and enjoy a drink in the company of jazz musicians who gather on our stage to trade licks on timeless standards. Bonnie 'Prince' BillyMusicBonnie 'Prince' BillyBonnie “Prince” Billy – the alter ego of American songwriter Will Oldham (see too: Palace, Palace Brothers, Palace Music, ...) – comes to AB to present his new album We Are Together Again. On this album, Oldham reflects on a changing world and on what remains when familiar structures disappear. Bonnie “Prince” Billy focuses on collaboration, friendship and community, and emphasises the importance of music creation as a collective act. Not as a denial of loss or decline, but as an intentional decision to remain creative and connected. The album was recorded at End of an Ear Studios in Louisville, Kentucky, and continues Oldham’s recent trajectory where he deliberately chooses works in his home town. Following on from I Made A Place and Keeping Secrets Will Destroy You, he again confirms his preference for understated arrangements and an organic group dynamic under the familiar banner of Bonnie “Prince” Billy.Live, this translates to a focused and intense set in which new songs stand aside older work. A concert that focuses on attention, detail and the power of playing together, delivered by one of the most consistent and distinctive voices of contemporary folk and Americana.“The most straightforward of Oldham's catalogue, and yet still rich with the oneiric and mysterious qualities that drew so many listeners to his art.” - Uncut “Mystical, alluring and straight from the heart, We Are Together Again cements Oldham's reputation as a major force in the singer-songwriter tradition.” - The WireDawn McCarthy weaves together traditional folk, spellbinding vocals and timeless stories to create a unique musical world. As the figurehead of Faun Fables and a regular collaborator with Bonnie “Prince” Billy, she moves effortlessly between ancient folk traditions and idiosyncratic contemporary songs.Tue 10 Nov · 19:00–22:30Ancienne Belgique · Brusselsfrom €38 MdM Groove QuartetMusicMdM Groove QuartetA few lines or paragraphs about your concert Martin de Marneffe returns with his quartet for an evening that promises to be memorable. From their story, she created a parallel with her own and questions herself in filigree about her relationships with her own sister: how to be sisters while being rivals, how to remain sisters without becoming rivals… What remains beyond the conflict, beyond the performance? Will their sisterhood allow them to go through everything? Will this sisterhood survive all the trials? Two stories that weave together beautifully, and it will be a question of bodies, women, skin, ambition, tennis, place to take, movement, effort, and performance. It will also be a question of loyalty, complicity, love. Coltrane sculpted an entirely inimitable signature sound with his saxophone (a Belgian invention by Adolphe Sax). His rich oeuvre is now considered a sacred legacy: “Many artists achieve greatness but very few produce work that is so moving that it’s considered sacred.” To mark Coltrane’s 100th birthday, in 2026 we honour his legacy with a series of dance performances, concerts, screenings and artist talks.JOE LOVANO x MELISSA ALDANA x NDUDUZO MAKHATHINI x LINDA MAY HAN OH x JEFF 'TAIN' WATTS: BOTH DIRECTIONS AT ONCETo mark the centenary of John Coltrane’s birth, five leading figures from the world of contemporary jazz pay tribute to his vision and legacy. Elsa Amiel takes us into their rehearsal room, onto the stage and on tour, staying close to the collective work of bodies, voices and imagination. Texts are read, repeated and reworked until images emerge. Driven by an endless urge for innovation, he constantly seeks dialogue with other genres and art forms, from spoken word to hip-hop. This openness translates into layered music full of contrasts: at times restrained and minimalistic, at others bursting with exuberant grooves. With his distinctive trumpet playing, Akinmusire leads his quartet through soundscapes that feel at once experimental, urgent, and deeply personal.Thu 12 Nov · 20:15–21:45Flagey · Brusselsfrom €27 Feydeau, room 21TheatreFeydeau, room 21We are in 1920. In room 21 of a psychiatric hospital in Paris, Georges Feydeau, one of the greatest authors of vaudevilles, is interned. No, this is not a farce, the greatest of vaudevillians ended his life insane! It didn't take more for two Olybrius, taking up the codes of the genre, to seize this tragi-comic situation to create a real… vaudeville based on historical reality. Locked in room 21, Feydeau cannot help but transform doctors and nurses into grand-guignolesque characters of a play of which he is this time the hero. And here are the spectators press-ganged into an implacable mechanism, where misunderstandings and slamming doors follow one another at a frantic pace. The famous room becomes the nerve center of all disorders, and, by the magic of the theater, transforms into a hotel where everyone tries to hide their intentions: lovers, spouses, servants, and guests cross paths and get tangled up until total confusion. A burlesque and virtuoso comedy, with lively dialogues, where everything is told “in the manner of Feydeau.” A comedy that unfolds all the art of laughter, precision, and perfectly orchestrated chaos. A troupe of enthusiastic actors, full of imagination, pay a vibrant tribute to one of the funniest authors of the French repertoire. To warm up and make our winter evenings sparkle. Guided by Charlotte Rampling's voice, an archivist delves into the 550 boxes left behind by Chris Marker, one of France's great filmmakers and the creator of La Jetée and Sans Soleil, who always cultivated a sense of mystery around his life and identity. Photographs, personal documents and fragments of his films are brought together in an attempt to reconstruct the man behind the work. Gradually, the archive becomes a field of investigation, where Marker's films enter into dialogue and the past comes back to life. Brecht Debackere weaves together excerpts from La Jetée, Sans Soleil and other films with Marker's archive, thereby creating a journey through memory, disappearance and an ever-shifting identity.Sat 14 Nov · 19:00–20:40Bozar - Centre for Fine Arts · Brussels Les 4 Saisons - BalletTheatreLes 4 Saisons - BalletBaroque composer Antonio Vivaldi wrote ‘The 4 Seasons’ as a tribute to nature. Five centuries later, this inspired Jockel’s paths in the sky, in which he deconstructs the orchestra, letting music emerge from every corner of the hall. Slowly, the musicians filter back toward the stage to unite for Miloslav Kabeláč’s The Mystery of Time: : a profound symphonic translation of his fascination with space and the unyielding order that governs the cosmos.
