MiscDiscovery of Brasserie de la Senne in EnglishAt the beginning of the 20th century in Brussels, there were still about a hundred breweries. After the world wars, industrialisation and the formalisation of tastes, there was only one left until Bernard met Yvan in 2002. Together they create the Brasserie de La Senne. Formatted and sweet beers give way to bitterness. Today installed in 4500 m² on the Tour & Taxis site, they have put technology at the service of their beers. During this visit, you will have access to the production area. An opportunity to discover how craft beer is made in such impressive production facilities. Finally we will end the tour with a commented tasting of four major beers of the brewery.Sun 1 Nov · 13:00Brasserie de La Senne · BrusselsUntil 20 Decfrom €20

CinemaExpat cinema : NAZANAZA by Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor, two of the makers of the Oscar-winning documentary No Other Land, is a revealing film about the systems behind the large-scale civilian casualties in Gaza. On the rooftops of Tel Aviv, far from the war zone, Israeli soldiers hold secret conversations at night. Step by step, it becomes visible how the army and intelligence services determine who is a target, which technologies and procedures are deployed, and how many civilian casualties an attack is allowed to cost. Dozens to sometimes hundreds of Palestinian civilians can be considered an acceptable price for eliminating a single target. The film thus poses the painful question: how can the killing of innocent civilians become so normalized within a military apparatus that it is no longer viewed as a moral or legal problem? The title refers to Nezek Agavi, ‘collateral damage’, the Israeli military term for the expected number of civilian casualties from an airstrike. The term thus symbolizes the dehumanization deeply ingrained in the system: civilian deaths are not a tragic side effect, but a foreseen and accepted part of military operations. NAZA premiered at the Venice Film Festival, where the film won the Special Jury Prize.Sun 1 Nov · 16:10Cinema Galeries · Brusselsfrom €7.80
CinemaThe Only Living Pickpocket in New YorkThe Only Living Pickpocket in New York is a stylish crime film and a tender, melancholic ode to a changing New York. Set against the city’s iconic streets, with an atmospheric soundtrack and an impressive cast including John Turturro, Giancarlo Esposito, Steve Buscemi and Jamie Lee Curtis, Noah Segan paints a world where old habits and faded glory are increasingly under pressure. Harry Lehman (John Turturro) is an old-school pickpocket in a time when his profession is slowly dying out. Still, he keeps stealing to make ends meet and to care for his seriously ill wife, Rosie. When what seems like a simple theft unexpectedly brings him something of great value, Harry becomes entangled in a dangerous web of criminals. What follows is a nerve-racking race through the streets of New York, as Harry must rely on his old-school skills, his network and his instincts to save himself and get his stolen goods back. With suspense, dry humor, melancholy and a sharp eye for the city, The Only Living Pickpocket in New York tells a story about loyalty, faded glory and what remains when the world around you changes forever.Sun 1 Nov · 17:50Cinéma Aventure · BrusselsUntil 3 Nov

The board of directors are meeting again. In their endless pursuit of the perfectly optimized meeting, looping discussions about their previous meetings are leading them further and further away from their planned agenda. Ferdinand Vaněk has been invited to his friends’ house, affluent couple Vera and Michael. Met with the surprising sight of a completely remodeled apartment, Ferdinand can do little else than play along with his friends’ new-found eccentric opulence. As the night’s conversations turn from casual to personal, and later to invasive, Ferdinand wonders what could have happened to Vera and Michael since he last saw them. Certainly the recent sudden change of their country’s political regime could not have anything to do with it.Fri 6 Nov · 20:00The Warehouse Studio Theatre · BrusselsUntil 7 Novfrom €15

Miscmeet the author: katie kitamuraKatie Kitamura is an American journalist, writer and critic of Japanese origin. She holds a PhD in American literature, teaches creative writing at New York University and lives in Brooklyn with the writer Hari Kunzru (The Illusionist).
After the publication of her first two novels (The Longshot and Gone to the Forest), Kitamura’s international career took off in 2017 with A Separation, a fascinating psychological thriller set in the Peloponnese. It was followed by Intimacies, which delved into the mind of an interpreter at the International Criminal Court in The Hague. With her fifth novel, Audition – shortlisted for the Booker Prize, longlisted for the Women’s Prize for Fiction, and a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize – Kitamura has cemented her status as a leading American writer, admired by Barack Obama as well as by fellow writers Samantha Harvey, Hernan Diaz and Lauren Groff.
Audition
Audition opens in New York with a glimpse into the daily life of an accomplished actress. Married to a man she loves, she is enjoying a string of successful theatre productions. But a young stranger throws her life into turmoil when he announces that he is her son. Who are they to one another? It is with this question that Katie Kitamura, at the height of her artistry, sets in motion a game of deception. Blurring the lines between reality and performance, Audition is a multilayered book that questions the roles we all play, more or less consciously, in our lives. Readers are kept on their toes. Loosely inspired by Rosemary’s Baby, Audition is a brilliant, unsettling and fascinating book.
Don’t miss this unique chance to meet the American writer during her visit to Brussels.
About Audition
‘A lightning bolt of a novel.’
— Financial Times
‘Katie Kitamura is one of our most brilliant writers, saying far more in her silences, blank spaces, and disruptions than most novelists can say in a hundred thousand words. Audition is eerie, a book so cold it feels hot.’

ExhibitionMaison Roosenboom (EN)On Faider Street in Brussels–Ixelles stands a remarkable building from a time when art and architecture merged into enchanting creations: Maison Roosenboom. Designed in 1900 by painter-architect Albert Roosenboom, this house represents a highlight of Brussels Art Nouveau, alongside icons such as the Horta Museum and Maison Hannon.
Once abandoned and declared uninhabitable, the building underwent an extensive restoration from 2020 onwards, returning it to its original splendour. With its floral wrought ironwork, elegant lines and richly detailed decoration, Maison Roosenboom embodies the spirit of an artistic revolution, where every detail speaks of the ambitions and creativity of a remarkable era.
From Decline to Renewal: A Story of Meticulous Restoration
The restoration of Maison Roosenboom is a story of passion, patience and craftsmanship. The façade, featuring sgraffito panels by Privat Livemont and a striking bow window, has regained its original colours. Inside, the interiors come back to life through mosaics, wall panelling and ceiling paintings, carefully restored to their historic appearance.
The restoration reveals not only the beauty of the building, but also the stories behind its details: from the symbolism embedded in the decoration to the techniques used at the time. Every space — from the impressive entrance hall to the intimate salon — breathes the atmosphere of a bygone era, where contemporary expertise and historical authenticity go hand in hand.
Maison Roosenboom stands as a symbol of Brussels’ rich architectural heritage. The house invites exploration and admiration for the ambition and craftsmanship of a period in which art and everyday life were inseparably linked. A visit to this exceptional residence is a journey through time — an experience that brings the beauty and stories of Art Nouveau vividly to life.Sun 8 Nov · 16:00–17:00maison Roosenboom · Brusselsfrom €21

In a small Chinese town with straight lines and a cold climate, bodies begin to stir. The slightly eccentric characters make their way through this normative, stifling place, often entering into improbable and astonishing relationships. The film is both lyrical and idiosyncratic in its portrayal of freedom and desire in an extremely normative society. The storylines become intertwined, and the queer narratives burst at the seams even as they're held back. Banned in China, this film is a ballet in black and white, a poetic middle finger to an oppressive regime.

CinemaChuzalongoIn collaboration with the Embassy of Ecuador and on the occasion of the Day of the Dead, Instituto Cervantes Brussels will screen the Ecuadorian thriller "Chuzalongo" (Diego Ortuño, 2024) on Monday, 2 November at 6:30 p.m.
"Chuzalongo" is set in a world of magic and fantasy, drawing on the narrative tradition of the classic vampire story. The film takes place at the end of the 19th century, when the Liberal Revolution was about to achieve its goals in Ecuador. Colourful characters and beautiful locations transport the audience to a world where traditions hold special significance and nature plays a profound role in the story.
Synopsis
A lost child appears in a remote Andean village at the end of the 19th century. Nicanor, the village priest, decides to take care of him and discovers that a few drops of the child’s blood make crops grow and bear fruit miraculously. Before long, Nicanor realises that the only way to keep the child alive is to feed him human blood.
The priest must decide whether to protect the child and bring him new victims, or let him die, knowing that the crops on which the villagers depend will die with him.

NA/UK — 2025 — 79’ — DOC — VO EN — ST FR
Out Laws is a documentary investigation that follows several activists as they challenge laws criminalising LGBTQIA+ people in their respective countries. All of these countries are former British colonies. We delve into the archives and discover that the laws enacted by the former colonial power are the roots of queerphobia in these societies. This prompts us to question certain assumptions and stand up to governments. The film exposes, on the one hand, the political forces attempting to force queer people back into the closet and, on the other hand, the movement that resists with courage, pride, and solidarity.

MiscPalace of Justice: the largest courthouse in the worldIn the 19th century, the Palace of Justice was the largest building constructed in Europe. More than 140 years later, its dome still dominates the Brussels skyline. The man behind it, Joseph Poelaert (1817-1879), was a stubborn jack-of-all-trades who refused to adhere to any fixed style. His unbridled dedication drove him to exhaustion, and he was unable to complete his gigantic design himself. The people of Brussels meaningfully called him the Schieven architect – and that was not a compliment.
The Palace of Justice is a neoclassical monument with striking Assyrian-Babylonian features. Poelaert saw architecture as a moral and almost metaphysical task: proportions, dimensions, and motifs had to make order, justice, and the separation of powers visible. This layered symbolism, nourished by ancient cultures and religious traditions, makes a visit here special. You will discover Poelaert's life, his vision, and the building's place in the city and the justice system. During this guided tour, our expert guides breathe life into this colossal monument with their captivating stories.
What about those scaffolding structures?
Many individuals have never seen the building without scaffolding. However, there is hope! The Brussels Region has developed a plan to complete the restoration of the façade by 2030. This timing is ideal to add extra splendor to Belgium's 200th anniversary celebrations.Wed 4 Nov · 14:00–15:30Brussels' Palace of Justicefrom €15

Castration Movie explores the overt transphobia of Izzy, a straight woman grappling with her partner Tiffany’s transition. It’s a premise that might put us off—were it not for the fact that the film is directed by Louise Weard, a trans woman filmmaker from the same artistic collective as Jane Schoenbrun. Weard’s take on this transmisogynistic spiral proves to be masterful, oscillating between cynicism, empathy, fascination, and horror, and ultimately provoking a true catharsis for anyone who has endured such nonsense.Wed 4 Nov · 20:00Beursschouwburg · Brusselsfrom €10

CinemaTaiwan New CinemaDeveloped as part of Michael Lin’s exhibition, Tea Towels and Serviettes, at La Loge, this film programme expands on an important reference in the artist’s practice: Taiwan New Cinema.
The movement emerged in the 1980s during a period of significant social and political transformation in Taiwan, as martial law ended and rapid economic growth reshaped the country. As Taiwan’s cities changed over time, the ways people related to one another also evolved, and ideas of “home” began to be redefined, often in relation to urban life. Filmmakers turned their attention to this everyday life, exploring changing relationships between people, the transformation of rural and urban environments, and the emergence of a new middle class. In this context, the films presented in this programme trace a broader genealogy of image-making that connects personal and collective histories to shifting political, social, and cultural realities.
In this programme, Michael Lin invites the Taiwanese collective P.M.S., long engaged with the intersecting discourses of identity, gender, and Indigeneity, to initiate a dialogue through a complementary selection of documentaries and fiction films. In response to Lin’s interest in everyday life and cultural contexts, P.M.S.’s selection brings forward realities and narratives that have coexisted since the 1980s yet have remained marginalised within cinema, moving between the grand currents of the era and the intimate scale of everyday life.
P.M.S. is a Taiwanese collective composed of Posak Jodian, Manman, and Sophie Chen. The name P.M.S. combines the first syllables of their names while also referencing the English acronym for “Premenstrual Syndrome”, reflecting their critical engagement with dominant historical narratives. They also playfully reinterpret it as “Probably Meaning Something”, underscoring their openended and reflective approach to questioning established social and cultural frameworks. Since 2022, the three members have worked collectively on projects exploring the intersections of Indigenous perspectives, gender, and contemporary social issues. They have curated film programmes and screenings across Taiwan, Indonesia, Vietnam, and Japan. Their practice frequently engages with the betel nut as both a cultural symbol and a connective thread, bringing communities together, fostering translocal solidarities among women, and opening space for alternative narratives – one chew at a time.

MiscArtist talk / Q&A: Craig Leon - RamonesPunk 50, is AB’s celebration of fifty years of chaos, freedom and bold expression. We honour the rich past, the vibrant present and the future of punk with exhibitions, films, talks, a ‘zine market and a hard-hitting line-up of international icons, Belgian legends and the new generation of punk musicians.Craig Leon (1949) belongs to the select group of producers who have helped shape music history. He worked as producer, composer, arranger and musician with artists like Talking Heads, Suicide, Blondie, Richard Hell & the Voidoids, Front 242, The Fall and many, many more.We invite him particularly to talk about the legendary The Ramones ‘first’ for which he sat behind the dials as producer, and thus helped form the early days of punk.Leon began his career in the seventies at Sire Records, where he helped to discover and produce early punk and new wave artists. In the eighties, he expanded his work to classical and world music, collaborating with artists like Luciano Pavarotti.Later his focus shifted to his own compositions, in which he combined electronic, classical and ambient styles. His 1981 album Nommos achieved cult status for its futuristic, minimalist sound. Leon also worked on film, television and orchestral projects. He continues to compose and perform internationally, building bridges between pop and avant-garde. To this day, he is praised for his versatility and innovative studio vision.Mon 9 Nov · 19:30–22:00Ancienne Belgique · Brussels
CinemaLe Chat dans le Sac - Gilles GroulxThe film and the concert will be introduced in detail by Guy Peters.
Gilles Groulx's first feature-length fiction film, which incorporates documentary techniques and a soundtrack featuring music by John Coltrane. The cast consists of non-professional actors, the dialogue is improvised, and continuous filming in natural settings ensures the spontaneity and authenticity characteristic of documentary productions. Through the story of a couple in their twenties, the film raises the fundamental question of the Quebec people's political coming of age, as perceived by a filmmaker driven by ideals and the pursuit of the absolute.
For the soundtrack, Gilles Groulx, a great admirer of Coltrane, travelled to New Jersey himself to record John Coltrane and his band in his studio. These recordings appear on the posthumous album Blue World, released in 2019. Coltrane did not record new material for the soundtrack; instead, he drew on his existing discography. On the day of the film we will also present the concert "Coltrane 100" with an all-star line-up, including Joe Lovano, Melissa Aldana, Nduduzo Makhathini, Linda May Han Oh, and Jeff "Tain" Watts. CinemaThe New Museum - Birgitte SigmundstadThe story of a wildly ambitious project that ends up overwhelming everyone.
Behind the construction of the largest museum in the Nordic countries lies a gallery of characters: from the hyperactive director to the frustrated architect, from overwhelmed curators to dubious and troublesome patrons- not to mention the people who simply think it's "ugly".
Birgitte Sigmundstad delivers a documentary comedy that is as funny as it is revealing. Who decides what a museum should be today? And who is it for?
As the opening of Kanal - Centre Pompidou Brussels sparks its own debates, expectations and controversies, The New Museum brings a sharp sense of humour to the political, symbolic and human stakes behind the birth of a major cultural institution.Wed 11 Nov · 19:30–22:00Paleis voor Schone Kunsten · Brussels
MiscMeet the Writer: Zadie SmithA long-awaited guest on Bozar's literary stage.
Zadie Smith will be in conversation with Annelies Beck about literature, art and the imagination. The occasion is her essay collection Dead and Alive, a book that reflects with exceptional clarity on the significance of fiction, observation, and critical thinking in an age of social acceleration.
For over twenty years, Zadie Smith has been hailed as one of the most important voices in contemporary English-language literature. She made her international debut with the celebrated novel White Teeth and subsequently published, among other works, On Beauty, NW, and Swing Time. Her intellectually precise and deeply engaged essays explore themes such as identity, language, migration, art, and the role of fiction in a changing world.
This evening will focus not only on Smith's literary work, but also on her incisive and generous perspective on art. Drawing on essays such as her defence of fiction and her reflections on artists, including Celia Paul, Toyin Ojih Odutola, and Kara Walker, we will explore how images and language can enrich one another.
An encounter between seeing, reading, and thinking with one of the most original writers of our time.Thu 12 Nov · 20:00–21:30Bozar - Centre for Fine Arts · Brussels
ExhibitionFrancisco Mendes Moreira - 'Unlonely'When you cast your eyes upon a painting by Francisco Mendes Moreira, you are like a commuter standing at the edge of the platform, resisting the pull of a high-speed train rushing past at full speed. His painting opens a window onto a vertiginous and hypnotic unconscious.
What I mean by this is that a first glance is not enough to grasp the full extent of its magnetic power. The pictorial energy emanating from Francisco’s work reminds me of a sensation I experienced at the Museum of Modern Art when standing before a work by Max Beckmann, Max Ernst, Soutine and, of course, Picasso. Yet his universe may be closer to that of Frida Kahlo and René Magritte. The game of comparisons says more about the critic than about the painting itself, but the superlative nature of these comparisons reflects my conviction of the artistic excellence of the subject I am defending here.Fri 13 Nov · 14:00–18:00Alice Gallery · Brussels

CinemaNostalgia for the LightWhat can the stars teach us about memory?
In Nostalgia for the Light, Chilean filmmaker Patricio Guzmán draws a parallel between two searches taking place in the Atacama Desert: that of astronomers observing the farthest reaches of the universe, and that of families searching for traces of loved ones who disappeared during Pinochet's dictatorship. Through this connection, the film explores our relationship with time, memory and history.
After the screening, Belmémoire, a local association based in Evere, will join us to reflect further and discuss the questions raised by the film. The evening will continue over drinks — the first drink is on us — with empanadas prepared by Belmémoire available for purchase.
The Romain Rolland Library will also offer a selection of books related to the film's themes, inviting everyone to continue exploring and reflecting.

CinemaNova '78 - Aaron Brookner & Rodrigo AreiasAn extraordinary moment of 1970s American counterculture, shot on 16mm and unseen until today.
In New York in 1978, the Nova Convention brought together a constellation of artists around writer William S. Burroughs: Patti Smith, Frank Zappa, Allen Ginsberg, Laurie Anderson, Anne Waldman and Philip Glass. Long thought lost, this footage was rediscovered and restored between 2012 and 2024, capturing an explosion of ideas and forms where poetry, music, performance and cinema collide.
But Nova '78 does more than bring a legendary event back to life. Beneath the artistic ferment, the fractures of an era emerge: political fears, threats of repression and the struggles already running through American society.Fri 13 Nov · 21:15–22:40Bozar - Centre for Fine Arts · Brussels
