Born in 1939, Arié Mandelbaum grew up in a Jewish family of Polish origin near Brussels South Station. He created the greater part of his oeuvre in Brussels, where he established and relocated his studios over the decades. Since the late 1950s, his paintings have woven together collective history, political commitment and personal experience. Over time, his visual language has become increasingly distilled, placing traces, erasure and memory at its centre. Fragile figures, overlooked histories and the violence of history emerge in compositions where white is not an absence, but an active force. The exhibition unfolds across CINEMATEK, Cinéma Galeries, the Maison des Arts et de la Culture Sociale (MACS – Grands Carmes), the Bruegel Cultural Centre, the Brussels Public Social Welfare Centre (CPAS), Maison CFC, Théâtre des Tanneurs and the Jewish Museum of Belgium. Guided tours, public conversations, film screenings and encounters with the artist will accompany the project, extending the resonances the works generate as they move from one place to another.Sun 1 Nov · 09:00–18:00Various places in BrusselsFree House of Memory / by Basil Al-RawiCinemaHouse of Memory / by Basil Al-RawiHouse of Memory /   is an immersive Virtual Reality experience by artist Basil Al-Rawi. Based on photographs and oral testimonies from the Iraq Photo Archive, he transforms archival material into a virtual space where memories can be revisited and explored.  In this 15-minute experience, you encounter personal stories of Iraq in the 1970s, as remembered by those who lived there. Through voices and images, Iraq emerges as a space of cultural richness and everyday life, shaped by memory and displacement of its people. The work offers a rare perspective on Iraqi history and diaspora experience.   Basil Al-Rawi works across photography, moving images, sculpture and digital technologies, exploring memory, identity and archival storytelling. The project was developed as part of his PhD research at the Glasgow School of Art.  House of Memory is part of Ireland's cultural programme for the Presidency of the Council of the European Union. From the early 20th century onwards, Brusselmans developed a distinctive body of work, independent of artistic trends yet firmly rooted in painterly tradition. His deep connection to the Brabant landscape and his modest way of life are translated into an authentic and recognisable visual language, situated at the intersection of abstraction and figuration. Through some 120 works, the exhibition introduces visitors to the remarkable oeuvre of a still underappreciated Belgian artist. Dialogues with contemporaries such as Fernand Léger, Piet Mondrian and Rik Wouters offer a fresh perspective on his work. The exhibition also highlights Brusselmans’ decorative commissions for the theatre, including the monumental sets he designed for the first French-language production of the opera Erwartung by Arnold Schoenberg at the Centre for Fine Arts in 1936. These lost stage designs are brought back to life by the contemporary Belgian painter Kristof Santy (b. 1987), who frequently draws inspiration from Brusselmans in his own work.Sun 1 Nov · 10:00–18:00Bozar - Centre for Fine Arts · BrusselsFree Classical at the Abbey: Trio FenixFestivalClassical at the Abbey: Trio FenixThe rebirth of Goldberg Ce Sunday, the famous Variations Goldberg de Jean-Sébastien Bach are reborn. The original aria with variations for keyboard (written, according to legend, for a nobleman suffering from insomnia) benefits from a fascinating new light in a refined adaptation for string trio. The string instrumentalists give each part a character of its own, while the architecture of Bach's masterpiece remains rock solid. Le Trio Fenix is composed of Shirley Laub, Tony Nys, and Karel Steylaerts, internationally renowned musicians.Sun 1 Nov · 11:00–12:30Dieleghem Abbey · BrusselsFree Classical at the Abbey: Sofie Vanden Eynde & Imago MundiMusicClassical at the Abbey: Sofie Vanden Eynde & Imago MundiDowland in a new light The lutenist Sofie Vanden Eynde wishes to make early music resonate within today's society. To this end, she throws, with Imago Mundi, a bridge between different cultures and artistic disciplines. The mezzo-soprano Eugénie De Mey and the Armenian duduk player Vardan Hovanissian accompany her in a deeply human show, "Tears into light", a story of hope and comfort. The laments of the Renaissance mingle, in an intimate meditation, with poetry, contemporary music, and improvisations on the duduk.Sun 1 Nov · 11:00–12:30Dieleghem Abbey · BrusselsFree In the gardenExhibitionIn the gardenIn 2026, the Maison des Arts is 200 years old! Three exhibitions evoking "the house", its public and private spaces, as well as its garden accompany this anniversary. After the house, it is its garden that inspires the third exhibition. Very vast at the construction of this country villa in 1826, it was largely amputated by the galloping urbanization of the neighborhood after 1865. A family "English-style" garden and playground for the Terlinden children, it transformed when the municipality bought the place in 1950. A pond was dug. It will be completed with sculptures and a fountain designed by Tom Frantzen. The old saddlery, which became the gardener's shed, was converted in the 60s into a small estaminet. Asleep for fifty years, it has today become an unusual place and a gourmet and festive address. The garden welcomes the neighborhood and visitors. It is a bubble of peace, an oasis of greenery, a corner to read sheltered from the trees and the noise. On the courtyard side, the house was adorned in 1876 with a winter garden intended for palm trees and tropical plants. It has disappeared today. The works, presented from September on the first floor, evoke our memories of the garden, ball games, and the sound of a lawnmower. They invite dialogues between the interior and the exterior, plants, trees, and living things. More info on the artists coming soon. Field / Off-fieldExhibitionCreation and mental disability. Field / Off-fieldThis exhibition is the third in the field | off-field series, the principle of which is to associate socio-artistic projects led by artists, grassroots actors, or engaged citizens. This time, our focus is on creative work with people with intellectual disabilities. No Sovereign Author presents Alissa, a documentary and collaborative project around imagery started with autistic youth who have little or no access to speech, accompanied in their daily lives by a medico-educational institute in northern France. The Hors Cadres project, conceived by Ladyfest BXL, initiates a reflection on contemporary feminist issues with participants from day-care centers in Brussels. Collaboration between artists is at the heart of two projects established at ArBA-EsA. Cartographie d’une ville imaginaire is a collective installation born from the encounter between students from the Art curriculum in Espace Public and artists from Centre Sésame, while Binôme LAB pairs Illustration students with artists from Créahmbxl who produce graphic works with four hands. Projects that go through a plurality of creative processes and forms of collaboration to encourage sharing, exchange, and also individual and collective expression. Projects that, while giving visibility to people with intellectual disabilities, above all respect their agency. The exhibition considers the pressure placed on diaspora communities to make themselves legible, to explain their humour, soften contradictions, package culture, and translate identity for an outside audience. No Need to Export turns away from that expectation. Across different practices, the participating artists engage memory, labour, faith, care, humour, desire, class, migration, and contradiction. The works do not attempt to offer a single image of Filipino identity. Instead, they make space for what may remain coded, intimate, excessive, sentimental, devotional, uncomfortable, or difficult to translate. What happens when Filipino artists do not perform culture as hospitality, nostalgia, decoration, or proof of integration? What becomes possible when meaning is allowed to remain partly untranslated? Through a narrative approach, it encourages the positive appropriation of one's personal history and highlights the resilience resources of each woman. This photographic project was developed with women, often single moms, migrants, homeless or in a situation of poor housing, welcomed within the Casa Frida and the Casa Vesta, transitional accommodation centers of the Samusocial. The starting point of this human and creative adventure was a simple question: what story does a scar tell? Each participant was invited to share a memory, an ordeal, a visible or invisible wound, which has become over time the witness of her strength and her journey. A 3-step process Telling oneself Initially, the participants were accompanied by the photographer Gaëlle Henkens and the cultural mediator Foued Bellali in order to put words on their story and to explore the narratives linked to their scars. They then declaimed these stories within the communities of the casas. Representing oneself They then took part in a photographic workshop led by Gaëlle Henkens. Through collective then individual work, each one sought to translate into images what her scar represents for her, between memory, identity and resilience. Transmettre Enfin, accompanied by Foued Bellali, cultural mediator of the non-profit organization 2Bouts, the participants became the ambassadors of their own narrative. Today, they share with the public these sensitive and powerful testimonies, carriers of hope, dignity and reconstruction.Mon 2 Nov · 13:00–17:00Centre culturel Espace Magh asbl · BrusselsFree Day of the Dead: Show (3+)TheatreDay of the Dead: Show (3+)Let yourself be carried away by the colorful world of Día de los Muertos! The movement emerged in the 1980s during a period of significant social and political transformation in Taiwan, as martial law ended and rapid economic growth reshaped the country. As Taiwan’s cities changed over time, the ways people related to one another also evolved, and ideas of “home” began to be redefined, often in relation to urban life. Filmmakers turned their attention to this everyday life, exploring changing relationships between people, the transformation of rural and urban environments, and the emergence of a new middle class. In this context, the films presented in this programme trace a broader genealogy of image-making that connects personal and collective histories to shifting political, social, and cultural realities. In this programme, Michael Lin invites the Taiwanese collective P.M.S., long engaged with the intersecting discourses of identity, gender, and Indigeneity, to initiate a dialogue through a complementary selection of documentaries and fiction films. In response to Lin’s interest in everyday life and cultural contexts, P.M.S.’s selection brings forward realities and narratives that have coexisted since the 1980s yet have remained marginalised within cinema, moving between the grand currents of the era and the intimate scale of everyday life. P.M.S. is a Taiwanese collective composed of Posak Jodian, Manman, and Sophie Chen. The name P.M.S. combines the first syllables of their names while also referencing the English acronym for “Premenstrual Syndrome”, reflecting their critical engagement with dominant historical narratives. They also playfully reinterpret it as “Probably Meaning Something”, underscoring their openended and reflective approach to questioning established social and cultural frameworks. Since 2022, the three members have worked collectively on projects exploring the intersections of Indigenous perspectives, gender, and contemporary social issues. They have curated film programmes and screenings across Taiwan, Indonesia, Vietnam, and Japan. Their practice frequently engages with the betel nut as both a cultural symbol and a connective thread, bringing communities together, fostering translocal solidarities among women, and opening space for alternative narratives – one chew at a time. Practical Information : 15.10–03.12.26, 19:00 All screenings take place at La Loge, except on 12.11, when a special screening will take place at Cinema Galeries, followed by a conversation with Michael Lin and P.M.S. Fiction, 158 min. Preceded by a conversation between Michael Lin and P.M.S. Collective (TBC), and followed by a short Q&A. This film marks the first installment of Hou Hsiao-hsien’s Taiwan trilogy. It depicts the tragic fate of the Lin family, whose lives are disrupted by tensions between local Taiwanese people and Chinese immigrants during the transition from Japanese colonial rule to the KMT(Chinese Nationalist Party) government.
