House of Memory / by Basil Al-RawiCinemaHouse of Memory / by Basil Al-RawiHouse of Memory /   is an immersive Virtual Reality experience by artist Basil Al-Rawi. Based on photographs and oral testimonies from the Iraq Photo Archive, he transforms archival material into a virtual space where memories can be revisited and explored.  In this 15-minute experience, you encounter personal stories of Iraq in the 1970s, as remembered by those who lived there. Through voices and images, Iraq emerges as a space of cultural richness and everyday life, shaped by memory and displacement of its people. The work offers a rare perspective on Iraqi history and diaspora experience.   Basil Al-Rawi works across photography, moving images, sculpture and digital technologies, exploring memory, identity and archival storytelling. The project was developed as part of his PhD research at the Glasgow School of Art.  House of Memory is part of Ireland's cultural programme for the Presidency of the Council of the European Union. From the early 20th century onwards, Brusselmans developed a distinctive body of work, independent of artistic trends yet firmly rooted in painterly tradition. His deep connection to the Brabant landscape and his modest way of life are translated into an authentic and recognisable visual language, situated at the intersection of abstraction and figuration. Through some 120 works, the exhibition introduces visitors to the remarkable oeuvre of a still underappreciated Belgian artist. Dialogues with contemporaries such as Fernand Léger, Piet Mondrian and Rik Wouters offer a fresh perspective on his work. The exhibition also highlights Brusselmans’ decorative commissions for the theatre, including the monumental sets he designed for the first French-language production of the opera Erwartung by Arnold Schoenberg at the Centre for Fine Arts in 1936. These lost stage designs are brought back to life by the contemporary Belgian painter Kristof Santy (b. 1987), who frequently draws inspiration from Brusselmans in his own work.Sun 1 Nov · 10:00–18:00Bozar - Centre for Fine Arts · BrusselsFree Classical at the Abbey: Trio FenixFestivalClassical at the Abbey: Trio FenixThe rebirth of Goldberg Ce Sunday, the famous Variations Goldberg de Jean-Sébastien Bach are reborn. The name is a tribute to Marcel, her deceased rooster, and to all uncles with beer bellies. A quirky combination that immediately makes it clear that she does not follow beaten paths. What started with personal songs on guitar grew into a band project in which narrative songs, multi-part vocals, and an organic sound come together. Met Tom Peeters on drums, Zjef Van Steenbergen on double bass, and Werend Van den Bossche on saxophone, Marcelle moves between singer-songwriter, jazzy Americana, and alternative folk. Somewhere between the individuality of Feist, the frankness of Adrianne Lenker, and the raw work of PJ Harvey, Marcelle seeks her own path. Her songs are sometimes small and subdued, sometimes playful and headstrong, but always start from a personal perspective. No grand gestures, but music with character, room for detail, and an eye for what usually falls between the lines. In 2025, Marcelle was selected for Sound Track and played at, among others, Boomtown and Luisterplein during the Gentse Feesten. Marte is currently working on her first EP and, with her band, is continuing to build a live sound in which the songs get all the space they need. listen on vi.be instagram Brewery Live Session --- Tagged: MarcelleSun 1 Nov · 21:00–22:00Café de Loge · GhentFree Viktor Perdieus & Stijn DemuynckMusicViktor Perdieus & Stijn DemuynckTwo musicians who let loose on tenor sax and percussion, with repetitive rhythms and improvisation as a connecting factor. In their music, traditional songs, rhythms, and melodies enter into a dialogue with contemporary arrangements, acoustic instruments, electronics, and improvisation. This creates a sound world in which musical influences from East and West meet and develop further. Over the years, ARIFA has released seven albums and performed in more than thirty countries spread across five continents. The ensemble has been a guest at renowned venues and festivals, including the Concertgebouw Amsterdam, North Sea Jazz, Southbank Centre in London, the Kennedy Center in Washington, WOMEX, and Jazzahead. Background, level, origin, or age do not play a role here. Making music, listening, or watching are of equal value. ‘Hamdam’ is a Persian word that literally means ‘the person who breathes the same air’. In de Perzische culture, it refers to a good friend or confidant. Someone with whom you can freely share your emotions and thoughts, without being afraid of a judgment. It is a safe place where everyone is welcome, and where deep bonds and mutual understanding are central. In de Hamdam sessions, this principle is converted into a multidisciplinary jam session, an invitation to share sounds, melodies, and compositions together. As a self-taught drummer, producer, songwriter, and singer, she has left her unique mark on collaborations with Alabaster DePlume, Matthew Herbert, Coby Sey, Tirzah, and Nadeem Din-Gabisi (her musical counterpart in An Alien Called Harmony). By touring extensively behind the drum kit, keyboards, and microphone, she has sharpened her instinct for composition and production. The debut album 'Momoko' sounds extraordinarily mature for a first record. Throughout, the stylistic influences of jazz musicians as well as singer-songwriters, experimental artists, and electronic producers can be heard, but Gill rejects imitation and shapes her unique sound based on feeling and expression rather than tradition. Gill lives in London and grew up in Japan and the US. She incorporates her broad perspective into her musical ideas and stories, with a unique voice she has developed from her instinct, collaborations, and self-study. The eleven tracks on the album represent a broad spectrum: the jazz-infused groove of 'No Others' and the harmony-infused, reflective 'Heavy' stand in contrast to the dark, confrontational sound of 'Shadowboxing', which transitions into an eerie, unconventional instrumental beat, 'Test A Small Area', and the impressive 50-piece choir on 'When Palestine Is Free' (featuring greats such as Shabaka Hutchings, Soweto Kinch, Alabaster DePlume, Coby Sey, Marysia Osu, and others). It is a highly personal and poetic recording that showcases the full, uncompromising range of Momoko's vision, presented in her own voice.Fri 13 Nov · 19:30–22:45Kunstencentrum VIERNULVIER · GhentFree

Made up of animal images cut from various media (newspapers, magazines, stamps, photographs, advertisements, etc.), these fascinating notebooks were published in 2017 by Roma publishing in a single volume: Animal Books - For Jaap, Zeno, Anna, Julian, Luca… The book has since enjoyed immense success and has been reprinted several times. Here, photography contributes to the construction of common imaginaries, to the transmission of minority experiences, and to the invention of desirable futures. The texts that accompany the images were written by the people photographed, multiplying the points of view and sharing the authority of the narrative. Presented on silk, the photographs become objects whose lightness and mobility favor flexible circulation, outside of established frameworks. It is awarded by a equal-representation jury composed of Belgian and French figures, with the presidency alternating between the two countries. For its 2026 edition, the prize was awarded to Sophie Bessis for her essay La civilisation judéo-chrétienne. Anatomie d'une imposture published by Editions Les Liens qui libèrent. The award ceremony will take place ON THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 5, 2026 at 6:00 PM at La Boverie and will be followed by a meeting with the winner. Sophie Bessis is a historian specializing in North-South relations and the condition of women in Africa and the Arab world. A former editor-in-chief of Jeune Afrique, she has also taught at Inalco and Paris I before serving as a researcher at IRIS. She is the author of several works, including L’Occident et les autres (La Découverte, 2000), Histoire de la Tunisie de Carthage à nos jours (Tallandier, 2019), and Je vous écris d’une autre rive, lettre à Hannah Arendt (Elyzard, 2021). La civilisation judéo-chrétienne. Anatomie d'une imposture For forty years, the concept of " Judeo-Christian civilization" has dominated political and media discourse in the West, presented as the cultural foundation of Europe and Amérique du Nord. But what does this expression, which has become a hegemonic reference, conceal? Co-opted by various actors—states, political movements, or nationalisms—this concept is used from all sides to rewrite history, serving in Europe to obscure two millennia of anti-Semitic persecutions, to deny the contribution of the East in its past, and to exclude Islam from its cultural references. Zionism, and subsequently the State of Israel from its creation, needed to assert their exclusive anchoring in the West, proclaiming themselves today as the "advanced bastion of Judeo-Christian civilization" against the "Arab-Muslim enemy," while Arab nationalisms saw in this expression a convenient instrument to deny the Jewish dimension of their own countries' history. Sophie Bessis reveals how this binary pair, far from being neutral, is used everywhere to make cultural and political convergences impossible, which could otherwise be so many paths to peace. Together we developed a unique songbook, inspired by our collection. You can experience the result of this special project during this atmospheric presentation moment: residents of residential care centers bring the music and the museum rooms to life with an intimate concert among the works of art. Prior to this presentation moment, the participating residential care centers received professional guidance from Koor&Stem to get started with the songs. Together with their supervisors, the residents dove into the repertoire and prepared themselves for their performance in M. Currently, three residential care centers are singing along with great enthusiasm: De Wingerd (Leuven), Compostella (Antwerp), and Dominicus (Lubbeek). Between the stars, you see dust, gas, ice, and moons floating, but listen, there is also something to hear in that space... For composer Wim Henderickx, the world was too small... He looked over distant horizons, peered at stars and planets, and wrote music inspired by earth, fire, air, and water. Using Met Henderickx’s music as a starting point, Helene Bracke created a performance that takes you on a journey through the universe. Stars and planets pass in review. Each with their own character, color, and temperament. Two percussionists and a singer play for, between, and with the audience and invite you for a journey past stardust, fiery celestial bodies, watery worlds, and a booming sun. Helene Bracke studied classical music at the Conservatorium van Gent and specialized in opera. She emerged as a maker, director, scenographer, and singer as a versatile artist within the music theater world. In 2025, she won the YAM Award for Beste Opera with ‘A la vie, à la mort. – Voor altijd’. She worked with, among others, the Belgian National Orchestra, Festival van Vlaanderen, Opera Ballet Vlaanderen, and numerous international partners. For young spectators, she created ‘@ASTRA’ at Musica, ‘Loopneus’ at De Spiegel, and ‘Madame Vitesse’ for Les Festivals de Wallonie.Tue 3 Nov · 10:00–17:00Cultuurcentrum Zwaneberg · Heist-op-den-BergFree Grandparent-grandchild dayFamilyGrandparent-grandchild dayIn the mood for a cool afternoon for yourself and your grandchildren? For board games and trading card games you can head to the Kuub. And in the Library you will discover a whole bunch of additional illustrators and try out RPGs or learn to play Pokémon. Also new this year is Pokémon Champions, the new mobile game you can play at the festival. At this edition of Rock Paper Pencil Festival there are two expos: there is the GRID expo by Pulp de Luxe and also a Stripgids expo in collaboration with graphic novel programs in Belgium where teachers and graduated comic book creators show how broad the comic book sector is. Furthermore, there is also a Stripgids Salon with Joost Swarte, Judith Vanistendael, Maarten Vande Wiele and Marte Verhoest. Just like in previous years, Kaaiman will perform a newly devised play in the Library and the actors from Productions & Zonen will walk around to take you into their fantasy world. In short, a whole day of fun for young and old, comic and board game fan and anyone who just wants to discover their creative talent. Curious? The aftermovie of 2025 will already give you an idea of the creative offerings and gaming fun you can experience there, whether you are 7 or 77, reader, player or creator. Follow us on INSTAGRAM and FACEBOOK for more updates in the coming weeks! --------------------- The poster was made this year by Maarten Vande Wiele.
