House of Memory / by Basil Al-RawiCinemaHouse of Memory / by Basil Al-RawiHouse of Memory /   is an immersive Virtual Reality experience by artist Basil Al-Rawi. Based on photographs and oral testimonies from the Iraq Photo Archive, he transforms archival material into a virtual space where memories can be revisited and explored.  In this 15-minute experience, you encounter personal stories of Iraq in the 1970s, as remembered by those who lived there. Through voices and images, Iraq emerges as a space of cultural richness and everyday life, shaped by memory and displacement of its people. The work offers a rare perspective on Iraqi history and diaspora experience.   Basil Al-Rawi works across photography, moving images, sculpture and digital technologies, exploring memory, identity and archival storytelling. The project was developed as part of his PhD research at the Glasgow School of Art.  House of Memory is part of Ireland's cultural programme for the Presidency of the Council of the European Union. On the rooftops of Tel Aviv, far from the war zone, Israeli soldiers hold secret conversations at night. Step by step, it becomes visible how the army and intelligence services determine who is a target, which technologies and procedures are deployed, and how many civilian casualties an attack is allowed to cost. Dozens to sometimes hundreds of Palestinian civilians can be considered an acceptable price for eliminating a single target. The film thus poses the painful question: how can the killing of innocent civilians become so normalized within a military apparatus that it is no longer viewed as a moral or legal problem? The title refers to Nezek Agavi, ‘collateral damage’, the Israeli military term for the expected number of civilian casualties from an airstrike. The term thus symbolizes the dehumanization deeply ingrained in the system: civilian deaths are not a tragic side effect, but a foreseen and accepted part of military operations. NAZA premiered at the Venice Film Festival, where the film won the Special Jury Prize.Sun 1 Nov · 19:30–20:50Cinéma Aventure · Brusselsfrom €7.80 Joyful JungleCinemaJoyful JungleDuring the school holidays, nine-year-old Ilze joins her family in the rainforest where they live with the Pemón tribe, near Devil's Mountain. Commentaar Hou yourselves to the branches of the trees, because Coward promises to blow an absolute gale through the (Flemish) film landscape. With Na Girl (2018) and Close (2022), Lukas Dhont scored high again with his third feature film at the Cannes Film Festival, where his two lead actors were also jointly awarded the prize for Beste Acteur. Coward is a Belgian WWI film like you have never seen one before, with an eye for the misery, but also for the love and camaraderie behind the lines, and the redemption that art can bring in dark times. The film is meanwhile also officially the Belgian submission for the Oscars, and also has a very high chance of actually landing on the famous shortlist for Beste Buitenlandse Film.Sun 1 Nov · 19:30Cinema ZED - Vesalius · LeuvenUntil 3 Novfrom €10 Iron BoyCinemaIron BoyChristophe is an 11-year-old farm boy who is bored to death on his strict father's farm. With a heavy dose of imagination, he discovers how fun it is to turn everything upside down… Commentaar Zijn's name might not ring a bell immediately, but director Louis Clichy is no stranger to the animation genre: for instance, he collaborated on Pixar films like Wall-E and Up. Met Iron Boy he delivers—in line with those films—a wonderfully mature family film, complete with a brilliantly nostalgic animation style. Young or old, empathizing with the sympathetic main character—who physically cannot always keep up quite as well with his peers—happens almost naturally. The coming-of-age edge and the richly present youthful fantasy complete this heartwarming film.Sun 1 Nov · 14:30Cinema ZED - Vesalius · LeuvenUntil 3 Novfrom €10 The Only Living Pickpocket in New YorkCinemaThe Only Living Pickpocket in New YorkHarry is an aging pickpocket who practices his trade with increasingly diminishing returns in a drastically changed New York. But one day his luck turns: he steals a mysterious USB drive and sells it for a fortune. However, this precious loot belongs to a ruthless criminal organization that will do anything to get it back. Harry has only a few hours to find the USB drive and bring it back. Commentaar Deze's entertaining crime film is an ode to the genre, to the city of New York, to changing times, and to the wonderful acting talent of John Turturro (The Big Lebowski, Do the Right Thing). Critics are unanimous: it is one of Turturro's best roles ever. Add to that a fantastic ensemble cast including Steve Buscemi (Reservoir Dogs, Fargo) and Giancarlo Esposito (Breaking Bad) and you know that director Noah Segan has made a gem that no thief could resist. A film thoroughly imbued in a good way with a touch of nostalgia for the analog past, not only with the seasoned pickpocket Harry, but also with the old-school police officer Warren, and perhaps also with the audience.Sun 1 Nov · 15:00Cinema ZED - Vesalius · Leuvenfrom €10 MillCinemaMillJune 1943. Jean Moulin, the leader of the French resistance, is arrested just as he is about to unite the forces of the Geheime Leger. In Lyon he finds himself facing Gestapo chief Klaus Barbie. What follows is a merciless interrogation. Voor Moulin begins an extremely heavy battle against manipulation and brutal violence. The survival of free France hangs by a thread. Commentaar De Hongaarse László Nemes (Son of Saul) is having a productive year: a few months ago his post-WWII drama Orphan was showing with us, and now it is time for the next one already. Met Moulin he dives deep into themes and narratives well known to him. How far a person can and wants to go in the resistance against oppression and absurd cruelty — here in the form of the Gestapo — is the central theme of the film, and a common thread throughout his entire filmography. What Wat Moulin makes especially clear is that Nemes is far from done telling stories, and is operating at the peak of his abilities as a technical filmmaker as well. The film premiered in Cannes, where it competed in the official competition.Sun 1 Nov · 20:00Cinema ZED - Vesalius · LeuvenUntil 3 Novfrom €10 The CraftCinemaThe CraftA young girl who has just started at a Catholic school quickly befriends a coven of witches that is shunned or feared by the other students. Specific to Cinema ZED Leuven The Craft is the choice of Girls On Film, a feminist film collective that wants to give a broader platform to cinema by and about women. Before the screening on Thursday, October 29, they will explain why this is their favorite 'schoolgirl' film. Commentaar The Craft came out at a tipping point in the horror genre. Basically, the genre was practically (creatively) dead in the '90s, but something was in the air that would soon change that. Later that same year, Scream (1996) confirmed that trend as the best-known example within 'campy' meta-horror. But actually The Craft was a bit earlier, because here too the irony flies thick and fast and a special balance is found between genuine suspense, fun, and pulp, drenched in a wonderfully kitschy high school vibe and cheesy '90s special effects. Actress Neve Campbell also had a huge year, because in combination with this role and a few months later Sydney Prescott in Scream, she became world-famous.Sun 1 Nov · 21:45Cinema ZED - Vesalius · LeuvenUntil 2 Novfrom €10 Shaun the Sheep: The FarmageddonCinemaShaun the Sheep: The FarmageddonThe residents of the farm are looking forward to Halloween immensely in this film, but the celebration is put at risk when a clumsy farmer destroys the sheep's pumpkin patch. Commentaar Shaun the Sheep is back for his third cinematic adventure! After the gigantic success of the first two parts, the iconic Aardman Studio turns this third film into a true Halloween adventure, with a wonderfully spooky (no worries, it never gets too scary) atmosphere, a missing farmer, a roaming beast, fields full of pumpkins, and of course plenty of festive Halloween preparations that naturally go completely haywire again.Sun 1 Nov · 14:30–12:30Cinema ZED - Vesalius · Leuvenfrom €10 To Be or Not To BeCinemaTo Be or Not To BeJoseph and Maria Tura run their own Shakespeare theater company in Warsaw and play the lead roles themselves. Commentaar Ernst Lubitsch fled as a German-Jewish filmmaker from the emerging National Socialism in Europe and managed to make a name for himself in Hollywood, where he also became a prominent member of the Hollywood Anti-Nazi League. His political convictions were integral to all his films, but certainly in the no fewer than 6 films he made during WWII, of which To Be or Not To Be is one. In a world teetering on the edge of the abyss, the themes of artisanship, censorship, collaboration, and resistance are both contemporary and timeless. Yet she receives support and love from her family: especially from brothers Alex and Max, while her mother Annick makes an effort to have a good bond with her. After her divorce, she is dating Malou's rowing coach again. Wanneer Max brings his girlfriend home one day, Malou's life is turned upside down: she develops feelings for the beautiful and confident Nouria, and as a result she not only risks ending up in an unwanted rivalry and love triangle, but also risks jeopardizing her precious bond with Max... Regisseur Cecilia Verheyden portrays Malou in a very personal way, with striking shots of her facial expressions: a deserved stage for the impressive acting of Femke Vanhove, whom we already know from ‘Radioman’. What also makes the film so good is that no earth-shattering dramas happen here, but ordinary life and the difficulties that come with it. Everything is also approached with a lot of nuance and tenderness, often using more images than words to make something clear. The dialogues also feel natural and spontaneous, and the characters are given space to show who they are. The rowing course in the film is that of Hazewinkel in Willebroek. ‘Skiff’ is a moving story about friendship, family, and identity. This beautiful coming-of-age story is therefore also suitable for teenagers! Not for nothing is he mockingly called “Cemento armato”: reinforced concrete. In the echoing halls of the presidential palace, he leads a lonely existence, mourning his wife and listening to hip-hop. Before he returns to ordinary life, he still has to make some bold decisions: two pardon requests and a groundbreaking bill. Decisions that will determine his legacy forever. Visually, the film is unmistakably Sorrentino: carefully composed frames, slow motion, and a pronounced electronic soundtrack. The result is an intriguing portrait of a man who says goodbye to power, but precisely because of that comes closer to himself. La Grazia is witty and moving, with witty dialogues, wonderfully sarcastic outbursts, and characters that are so colorful that they almost deserve their own film. In short: a Sorrentino grand cru. 133 MIN / ITALY / 2025 / 12+ DIRECTOR PAOLO SORRENTINO CAST TONI SERVILLO, ANNA FERZETTI, ORLANDO CINQUEMon 9 Nov · 20:00–22:13Cultuurcentrum Scharpoord · Knokke-Heistfrom €7 PrimaveraCinemaPrimaveraCecilia, a talented violinist staying in an orphanage, meets Vivaldi, who becomes her teacher. She wanted to shed a light on William Shakespeares son Hamnet, who died when he was eleven years old. It is O’Farrell’s fictional view of what the circumstances must have been like back then. A romanticized tale of how the most famous playwright on earth came up with the idea for the chef-d’oeuvre Hamlet. None other than the celebrated Chloé Zhao now brings this tragedy to the silver screen. Is it actually Hamnet of Hamlet? Well, in Shakespeare’s time those names were interchangeable. Stratford-upon-Avon, 16th century. In a world full of green, we see how the headstrong Agnes catches the attention of Will. He teaches Latin, but is much more occupied with that mysterious woman. In rapid succession a special love develops between the two and they have three children together, including twins. The offspring grow up in a warm nest, but they do see their father leave for London very often to occupy himself with writing and theater. During one of his trips to the English capital, tragedy strikes. Hamnet, their only son, loses his life to the plague. This has major consequences for the family dynamics. Two grieving parents each try to come to terms with the death of their son in their own way. ‘Hamnet’ stands out strongly above all because of an outstanding cast. Jessie Buckley absolutely deserved the Oscar for best actress. Next to her stands Paul Mescal, whom we know from ‘Aftersun’, ‘The history of sound’ and ‘All of us strangers’. He has a number of rock-solid monologues, but knows precisely how to strike the right chord even without words. 鳧he film draws you into its story through the powerful acting performances and strong dialogues. Those aspects are supported by the beautiful nature imagery and the music of Max Richter. Even though the family’s world is far removed from your own, you empathize with them and momentarily forget that it is the 21st century and you are sitting in a cinema chair.
