CinemaThe film choice of Bendt Eyckermans: The Arrival of Joachim Stiller by Harry KümelOn the occasion of his solo exhibition The Passenger at S.M.A.K. from October 31, 2026, to February 21, 2027, Bendt Eyckermans is given carte blanche to curate a film program in Sphinx Cinema.
For his selection, Bendt was inspired by the work of Harry Kümel. He chose De komst van Joachim Stiller and Malpertuis, two films in which he sees common ground with his own paintings. Just as in Kümel's films, a mysterious, almost magical-realist atmosphere hangs in his work.
Everyday scenes from his studio or from the street are translated into compositions that leave room for suggestion and mystery. The locations also play a role in his choice: De komst van Joachim Stiller takes place in Antwerp, the city where Bendt lives, while Malpertuis takes place in Ghent, the city where he is exhibiting with The Passenger.
De komst van Joachim Stiller will be screened at Sphinx cinema on November 1, 2026.
Malpertuis will be screened on November 23, 2026.Sun 1 Nov · 20:00Cinema Sphinx · GhentUntil 23 Novfrom €10

Before director Brad Bird scored hits at Pixar with films including The Incredibles and Ratatouille, this small masterpiece already drew attention. CinemaFilm Plateau: Ich glaub’ nie mehr an eine Frau (1929)This early German sound film, starring the world-renowned Austrian tenor Richard Tauber, was until recently recorded as lost. Thanks to research at the research center CIMS (UGent) and a collaboration between the Cinematek and the Deutsches Filminstitut, this recalcitrant melodrama about forbidden love, desire and homesickness in a port city can be admired again in its full glory.
Although the film has fallen into oblivion today, this crowd-pleaser continued to grace the halls in Ghent and other Belgian and Dutch cities for months and even years. Almost a hundred years after production, Film-Plateau is proud to unleash the Belgian premiere of this restored version on the young Ghent audience.
This screening will be introduced by film history lecturer Daniël Biltereyst.

CinemaCinema Club #53: Erik of het klein insectenboek (2004)Something is tingling in KASKcinema. Together with Kinoautomat we shrink to pocket size for this irresistibly charming Belgian-Dutch youth classic.
Like a worm in an apple, Erik or the Little Insect Book has nested itself in the heart of an entire generation. Based on the well-known book by Godfried Bomans, we follow Erik who during a visit to his grandfather is transported to the insect world. There he becomes acquainted with a biotope – equipped with juicy Dutch accents – that will change his life forever.
Decorated with beautiful costumes, craft-tastic special effects and voluptuous ants, Erik or the Little Insect Book is the child-friendly precursor to Isabella Rossellini's Green Porno. An evening of noughties nostalgia, however, evolves into a beehive of physical knowledge thanks to our guest speaker on duty, who guides you past the quirks, kinks and peculiarities of a bunch of critters.
This screening will be introduced by biologist Merel Janquart.

CinemaDJ Ahmet (CinéRABOT)A DJ on a tractor and pink sheep in a field. These are not the only surprises in this heartwarming feel-good film about identity and traditions. Just like in the classic crowd-pleaser Footloose, teenagers dance their way to freedom. Authentic, accessible, and very catchy. Get those dancing shoes ready.
Cheerful Ahmet is a shepherd in North Macedonia, but he would much rather become a DJ. Especially when he falls in love with the free-spirited Aya, who is about to be forced into an arranged marriage. CinemaGreen Carpet Film Festival: Earth's greatest enemyAnd here we are planting front-yard gardens
We drink from paper straws, take 3-minute showers, and try to avoid flying too much. And meanwhile, the world runs riot. Billionaires take private jets, multinationals overproduce en masse. And the biggest shots of the world? They bomb part of the world to smithereens.
*Earth’s Greatest Enemy* reveals a hidden truth behind the climate crisis: the role of the US military as the world's largest institutional polluter, linking war, imperialism, and ecological destruction. Through compelling testimonies from veterans, scientists, and frontline communities, it exposes how military operations poison ecosystems, accelerate global warming, and sacrifice the future for endless expansion. From melting glaciers in Alaska to polluted military bases in the US and toxic battlefields abroad, *Earth’s Greatest Enemy* offers a provocative and uncompromising analysis of an unassailable institution that plays a disproportionate role in the climate crisis.

CinemaThe Moment (2026)After a brat summer in which Charli XCX populated Instagram feeds with her album and took over everyone's AirPods, her biggest challenge turns out not to be success itself, but holding onto it. In The Moment she plays an exaggerated version of herself: a pop star who gets entangled in the expectations of the public, record label, and her own perfectionism. What begins as an ironic look at the machine behind the mega-star derails into a claustrophobic nightmare in which artist, alter ego, and marketing construct increasingly coincide with one another.
With this refreshing take on the concert film, Aidan Zamiri Charli translates stroboscopic concert aesthetics into film language. His delightfully unhinged satire of celebrity culture is a Russian roulette of flashing lights, hyped-up concert footage, and a hefty dose of self-deprecation. At the same time, this baroque behind-the-scenes asks how artists stay afloat in an ecosystem that always wants more, until the hype shifts to something new yet again.Thu 5 Nov · 20:30–22:30KASKcinema · Ghentfrom €4
CinemadodeNbergAs a 'Field Worker', former architect and KASK & Conservatorium teacher Wim Cuyvers set to work over the past year with the Genkse Terril. Although this mountain formed by excavated mine tunnels is an imposing presence, this place has no social function. At the initiative of C-mine, Wim and the Genk community sought out a symbolic purpose for the place.
This process of searching and repurposing was crafted into an engaging docu-fiction film. Starring Eartal and Saban, two young Genk 'street runners' who regularly meet each other at the Terril to voice their dissatisfaction with the world. One day they meet an old man who wants to be buried on the site. Thus the plan arises for a mountain of the dead that serves as a memorial site and national cemetery.

CinemaFilm-Plateau: A Sunday in Hell (1976)Dust in the eyes, mud on the face, and bone-breaking cobbles that make every single meter hurt. That is the 270 km from Paris to Roubaix. The documentary A Sunday in Hell by Danish director Jørgen Leth follows the notorious test of endurance of 1976 in which our indisputable golden generation of Flandriens (Merckx, De Vlaeminck, and Maertens) display their fighting spirit and stamina.
Everything begins even before the start, when mechanics meticulously prepare the bikes and riders shave their legs. The rivaling teams discuss their tactics in stylish seventies outfits. Motorcycle cameras, aerial footage, and close-ups bring the chaos of the race impressively close. All these ingredients make A Sunday in Hell 50 years later perhaps still the most beautiful cycling documentary—and homage to the victor—ever made.
This screening will be introduced by media scholar Ben De Smet.

CinemaThe Mountain Cat (1921)A charming lieutenant on his way to a remote fort is kidnapped by a bunch of mountain bandits. When the gang leader's daughter falls for this young officer, his captivity turns into an absurd love adventure. What in the hands of anyone else would be a simple melodrama completely derails under Lubitsch into a wacky comedy full of militaristic nonsense, wild mustaches, and infatuated rogue antics.
With its exuberant decor, expressionistic sets, and anarchist humor, Ernst Lubitsch turns the army into a playground where logic mostly gets in the way. Victory celebrations without victory, soldiers who would rather dance than fight, and military maneuvers that resemble a slapstick ballet more than anything else. Die Bergkatze ('The Wildcat') is a delightfully unhinged early Lubitsch, in which the director clearly had no intention yet of sticking to a single genre or a decent plot.

CinemaGreen Carpet Film Festival: Beat the HeatOldies Against the Heat
De Zwitserse 'KlimaSeniorinnen' (elderly women fighting against climate change) are on the front line. Instead of enjoying their retirement, these older women from Swiss society—coming from all parts of the multilingual country—want to do something about increasingly frequent heatwaves. They bravely take on their own country and file a complaint with the Europees Hof of Human Rights (ECHR) against the Swiss government, arguing that the authorities are doing insufficiently to protect their health. It is a seemingly hopeless endeavor that, after eight years of struggle, results in a spectacular ruling that attracts worldwide attention. On April 9, 2024, the ECHR rules that climate protection is a human right. A triumph for the Swiss KlimaSeniorinnen. Maar Zwitserland decides not to implement the groundbreaking ruling.
BEAT THE HEAT (original title: TROP CHAUD) offers a behind-the-scenes look at the fight against climate change. The activists, their legal team, legal and scientific advisors, and an NGO campaigner talk about their motivations. They tell a story whose significance has been largely underreported by the Swiss media. Fundamental questions are addressed concerning democracy, the rule of law, and global climate justice. At the same time, BEAT THE HEAT never loses sight of the fact that the fight against climate change is a complex and difficult task.

CinemaFILM: Eat More Trees (documentary)Every year, we lose 24 billion tons of fertile soil worldwide. That is thirty football fields per minute. If we keep farming the way we do today, we are literally pulling the rug out from under our food system.
Eat More Trees, narrated by actress Maaike Cafmeyer, shows how it can be done differently. During an inspiring journey from the Amazon rainforest to the fields of Europe and America, this documentary explores how agroforestry can regenerate our landscapes, restore biodiversity, and perhaps change forever how we produce food and even what we eat.
The screening will be preceded by an introduction by Arne Focketyn (director). After the film, there will also be time for a Q&A.

CinemaWillow and Wind (1999)When an Iranian boy accidentally breaks his classroom window, his teacher gives him one day to replace it. This sets in motion a seemingly simple yet deceptively complex quest in which he must arrange money himself, find a glazier, and eventually trudge back to school carrying a life-sized windowpane through a stormy landscape.
Written by Abbas Kiarostami and directed by Mohammad-Ali Talebi, the film fits perfectly within child-centered Iranian cinema in which simple stories leave room for larger themes. Talebi makes the vast, green landscape a character in itself in which nature is simultaneously beautiful and unrelenting. With its slow pace, austere style, and almost fairytale-like atmosphere, Willow and Wind turns a childlike task into a suspenseful parable about responsibility, powerlessness, and growing up. A small, poetic film that finds tension in the simplest of things.
The screening will be followed by a Q&A with director Mohammad-Ali Talebi.

CinemaOpera 2026: Carmen (Encore)When soldier Don José falls for the free-spirited Carmen, he becomes entangled in an all-consuming passion that completely derails his life. Bizet's famous opera is a sizzling story about love, jealousy, and freedom, with a tragic ending that belongs to the best-known in opera history. Richard Eyres beloved production of Bizet's masterpiece returns this season for a special reprise. Sopraan Elīna Garanča shines as Carmen, opposite tenor Roberto Alagna as Don José, in the iconic Met performance from 2010 — an absolute audience favorite. The score of Carmen contains so many world-famous melodies that you would almost forget how ingeniously it is constructed. From the famous Toreador aria to the heartbreaking Flower Song and Carmen's seductive Habanera and Seguidilla: every aria combines irresistible melodies with strong dramatic power. The duets and ensembles also belong to the most compelling in the opera repertoire.Sat 14 Nov · 18:30–21:32Kinepolis Gent · Ghentfrom €11
