ExhibitionJean Brusselmans - Painter by natureIn autumn 2026, Bozar will present a major retrospective of the painter Jean Brusselmans (1884–1953), the first comprehensive exhibition of his work since 1980. From the early 20th century onwards, Brusselmans developed a distinctive body of work, independent of artistic trends yet firmly rooted in painterly tradition. His deep connection to the Brabant landscape and his modest way of life are translated into an authentic and recognisable visual language, situated at the intersection of abstraction and figuration. Through some 120 works, the exhibition introduces visitors to the remarkable oeuvre of a still underappreciated Belgian artist. Dialogues with contemporaries such as Fernand Léger, Piet Mondrian and Rik Wouters offer a fresh perspective on his work.
The exhibition also highlights Brusselmans’ decorative commissions for the theatre, including the monumental sets he designed for the first French-language production of the opera Erwartung by Arnold Schoenberg at the Centre for Fine Arts in 1936. These lost stage designs are brought back to life by the contemporary Belgian painter Kristof Santy (b. 1987), who frequently draws inspiration from Brusselmans in his own work.Sun 1 Nov · 10:00–18:00Bozar - Centre for Fine Arts · BrusselsFree

ExhibitionShape of AbsenceThe Boghossian Foundation presents 'Shape of absence', an exhibition initiated at the invitation of Louma Salamé, which bears witness to the ongoing heritage tragedy unfolding in Syria since 2011. The exhibition is centered on Hrair Sarkissian’s monumental installation 'Stolen Past', presented in dialogue with Iconem’s immersive images of the site of Palmyra. A poignant reflection on disappearance, memory, and resilience.
As cradle of ancient civilisations and major cultural crossroads, Syria has, since 2011, seen its heritage gravely threatened and exploited by war through destruction, looting, and the illegal antiquities trades. The exhibition seeks to bear witness to this ongoing tragedy while underscoring the urgent need to document sites in the face of the loss of millions of archaeological objects.
'Stolen Past', Hrair Sarkissian’s powerful installation, lies at the heart of this enquiry. Trained from an early age in his father’s photographic studio in Damascus, the artist is now recognised as one of the leading conceptual photographers of his generation. Deeply rooted in history and memory, his practice finds a particularly poignant resonance here.
The monumental installation presents forty-eight lithophanes arranged like funerary stelae, creating an atmosphere of contemplation and remembrance. When illuminated, they reveal images reminiscent of black-and-white photographs depicting artefacts that disappeared from the Raqqa Museum in Syria. Founded in 1981, the institution once housed some 8,000 objects spanning a vast historical period. Between 2013 and 2017, the Islamic State took control of the city and systematically looted its museums and collections. Of these thousands of invaluable pieces, only 880 are known to remain today.
By adapting a technique dating back to the mid-nineteenth century, the artist documents these absent remnants through lithophanes produced by means of 3D printing on thin translucent plaques. The project highlights the ways in which absence may be made visible, while more broadly exploring the forms of memory that emerge within communities shaped by violence.
In resonance with this work, the immersive images presented in the exhibition stem from ICONEM’s 3D digitisation and reconstruction technologies, revealing the site of Palmyra in Syria, fragile under the effects of time and conflict. Through monumental remains, sculpted details, and silent expanses, visitors are invited to contemplate not only what endures, but also what has been lost. Absence here becomes a visible form, embodied in traces, ruins, and fragments that continue to tell a story.
At the intersection of art, memory, and innovation, 'Shape of absence' questions our relationship to lost heritage and the capacity of images to preserve what once seemed irretrievably gone.Sun 1 Nov · 11:00–18:00Boghossian Foundation - Villa Empain · Brussels
Exhibition//sabotageAt the turn of the 19th century, workers protested against unfair labour conditions by deliberately working badly, slowing down or degrading production, or putting machinery out of action. Today’s workers —whether they are warehouse staff or startup employees— deploy micro-resistance tactics to defy the algorithm-driven intensification of labour, exposing workplace abuses, outsmarting algorithms and organising collective pushback.
Likewise, contemporary artists embrace sabotage as a tool to dismantle oppressive systems. For them, it’s a form of creative resistance, bridging historical labour struggles with modern battles against exploitation, marginalisation and democratic backsliding.
The exhibition invites reflection on urgent questions: Where are today's creative acts and technologies of unmaking” that disrupt the exploitative mechanisms of capitalism? How do artists mobilise inventiveness, storytelling and mischief to produce a ‘poetry of dysfunction’? And, finally, will the machines join the rebellion?

ExhibitionIn the gardenIn 2026, the Maison des Arts is 200 years old! Three exhibitions evoking "the house", its public and private spaces, as well as its garden accompany this anniversary. After the house, it is its garden that inspires the third exhibition. Very vast at the construction of this country villa in 1826, it was largely amputated by the galloping urbanization of the neighborhood after 1865. A family "English-style" garden and playground for the Terlinden children, it transformed when the municipality bought the place in 1950. A pond was dug. It will be completed with sculptures and a fountain designed by Tom Frantzen. The old saddlery, which became the gardener's shed, was converted in the 60s into a small estaminet. Asleep for fifty years, it has today become an unusual place and a gourmet and festive address. The garden welcomes the neighborhood and visitors. It is a bubble of peace, an oasis of greenery, a corner to read sheltered from the trees and the noise. On the courtyard side, the house was adorned in 1876 with a winter garden intended for palm trees and tropical plants. It has disappeared today. The works, presented from September on the first floor, evoke our memories of the garden, ball games, and the sound of a lawnmower. They invite dialogues between the interior and the exterior, plants, trees, and living things. More info on the artists coming soon. ExhibitionGuest at van Buuren: art, architecture and art of livingThe museum and gardens of David and Alice van Buuren form a rarely preserved total work of art in which art, architecture and refined art of living come together. The residence, built in 1928 in the style of the Amsterdamse School, was furnished without any financial restriction: the couple personally selected leading Belgian, French and Dutch designers to create a refined art-deco interior that has been preserved in its original state to this day. De Van Buurens received an exclusive circle of guests consisting of artists, politicians and international personalities here, which gives the house an almost mythical allure.
Inside, the intimacy of their private world still prevails. Every piece of furniture, carpet, work of art and stained glass window was chosen with exceptional care by a couple who had an infallible eye for art and design. David van Buuren was both a good friend and patron of Gustave Van de Woestijne and owned no fewer than 31 paintings by him. The art collection also includes works by, among others, Hercule Seghers, Georges Minne, James Ensor and Rik Wouters, and belongs to the most remarkable private collections in Belgium.
The surrounding gardens reflect that same refinement. They were designed at the instigation of Alice van Buuren by the two greatest Belgian landscape architects of their time: Jules Buyssens and René Pechère. A recent restoration was awarded the European Heritage Award / Europa Nostra Award and is considered a textbook example of respectful heritage care. During the guided tour you will discover both the museum house and the gardens exactly as the Van Buurens had intended them: unique, elegant and imbued with an artistic vision.Sat 7 Nov · 11:15–12:45Van Buuren Museum and Gardens · Brusselsfrom €14
ExhibitionMaison RoosenboomAan de Faiderstraat in Brussels-Ixelles stands a remarkable building from the era when art and architecture merged into enchanting creations: Maison Roosenboom. Designed in 1900 by the painter-architect Albert Roosenboom, this house forms a pinnacle of Brussels Art Nouveau, alongside icons like the Horta Museum and Maison Hannon. The building, once abandoned and declared uninhabitable, underwent a thorough restoration starting in 2020 that brought it back to its original glory. With its floral wrought ironwork, elegant lines, and rich decorations, Maison Roosenboom embodies the spirit of an artistic revolution, where every detail tells of the ambitions and creativity of a special era.
From decay to revival: a story of meticulous restoration
The restoration of Maison Roosenboom is a story of passion, patience, and craftsmanship. The façade, featuring sgraffiti by Privat Livemont and the striking bow window, regained its original colors. Inside, the interiors come back to life with mosaics, wood paneling, and ceiling paintings that have been carefully restored to their historical appearance. The restoration reveals not only the beauty of the building, but also the stories behind the details: from the symbolism in the decorations to the techniques applied at the time. Every space, from the impressive hallway to the intimate parlor, breathes the atmosphere of a bygone era, where modern knowledge and historical authenticity go hand in hand.
Maison Roosenboom symbolizes the rich architectural history of Brussels. The house invites discovery, and admiration for the ambition and craftsmanship of a time when art and daily life were inextricably linked. A visit to this special property is a journey through time, an experience that brings the beauty and stories of Art Nouveau to life.Sun 8 Nov · 14:00–15:00maison Roosenboom · Brusselsfrom €21

ExhibitionCentral. Never AloneThe Brussels-based office Central (°2015) develops meaningful architecture that enhances the urban context and contributes to the public realm. For Central, the discipline of architecture is intrinsically relational - never autonomous, but always shaped by context and uses, collaborations and a frame of reference.
From 11 November 2026 to 24 January 2027, Bozar and A+ present Never Alone. The exhibition starts from Central Office for Architecture and Urbanism's first retrospective publication, bringing together an overview of both its completed and ongoing projects. The practice's approach is further enriched by the perspectives of four invited photographers. Adrien De Hemptinne, Maxime Delvaux, Rory Gardiner and Delphine Mathy each offer a unique perspective on a selection of projects.
This exhibition is produced in collaboration between A+ and Bozar, with Buchhandlung Walther und Franz König responsible for publishing the catalogue.
During an inaugural lecture on 10 November 2026, Central's founders, Radim Louda, Paul Mouchet and Valentin Piret, will introduce the exhibition and its accompanying publication.

Look through the eyes of...
This is how a beautiful 17th-century engagement ring captured the heart of city poet Esohe Weyden. Scenarist Angelo Tijssens fell head over heels for an intimate Jesus. Het Berrefonds saw a source of comfort in a statue of the young deceased princess Bonne de France. De Oekraïense writer Sergey Shamanov found beauty and inspiration in flower still lifes.
Why did they choose this one artwork, and what did they feel? Look at the collection through their eyes and (re)discover many top works. Bet you'll also come across an artwork in this tour that triggers something in you?
The favorite of Fritz
En, what would have been the public favorite of Fritz Mayer van den Bergh (1858-1901)? De Antwerpse art connoisseur literally collected an entire museum in his short life: paintings, sculptures, tapestries, stained glass, ceramics, chests... Despite his extensive interest, he still had a soft spot for a Flemish master who painted a world-famous war scene in 1563. Can you guess it yet? Or does Fritz choose the portrait of his beloved mother? Guest in the Maagdenhuis
Het museum building is closed for renovation works. That is why a large part of our collection is hosted in the nearby, historic Maagdenhuis.

ExhibitionDouble visit 'Le Décor et son Double'On the occasion of the exhibition ‘40 years of Chambres d’Amis’, S.M.A.K. and Herbert Foundation are organizing a number of double visits to see both parts of the work 'Le Décor et son Double' by Daniel Buren. With a guide, you will walk from S.M.A.K. to Herbert Foundation, and along the way, you will discover the story of ‘Chambres d’Amis’ with a visit to one of the former locations. S.M.A.K. offers participants an entrance ticket to the museum for the entire day and a return voucher, as well as a selection of ‘Chambres d’Amis’ postcards. Entrance tickets must be reserved in advance via this link Exceptionally, we do not apply other discount formulas. Chambres d’Amis, 1986 In 1986, Jan Hoet, then director of the Museum for Hedendaagse Kunst in Ghent, now S.M.A.K., organized ‘Chambres d’Amis’. This exhibition presented contemporary art in private homes in various places in Ghent. Daniel Buren was one of the 51 international artists who created a work in situ, in the guest room of the private home of Annick and Anton Herbert. Buren's work, Le Décor et son Double , was, however, conceived as a work in two parts: the artist refused to leave the museum space entirely – as was Hoet's intention – and placed an almost identical reconstruction of the guest room in the public Museum van Hedendaagse Kunst in Ghent, then still housed in the Museum for Schone Kunsten. After the exhibition, the Herberts kept the intervention in their guest room. To this day, the work is part of the Collectie van Herbert Foundation. The public part of Le Décor et son Double , the ‘duplicate’, was reconstructed in 2011 and included in the S.M.A.K. collection. 40 years of Chambres d’Amis, 2026 On the occasion of the exhibition ‘40 years of Chambres d’Amis’ at S.M.A.K., both parts of the work by Daniel Buren, Le Décor et son Double, can be visited again. In conjunction with this, S.M.A.K. and Herbert Foundation are organizing a number of double visits. Participants will be guided by a guide through the exhibition ‘40 years of Chambres d’Amis’ at S.M.A.K., in which the public part of Le Décor et son Double is also set up. Via a city walk, they will then walk together towards Herbert Foundation, where they will pay a guided visit to the private part of Buren's work. Along the way, the guide will tell the story of ‘Chambres d’Amis’ with a visit to one of the former locations.Sun 1 Nov · 11:45S.M.A.K. · GhentUntil 10 Jan 2027from €20

ExhibitionAnimalsThe ANIMALS exhibition invites you to dive into an extraordinary bestiary inspired by Animal Books, a work by Lous Martens (Roma Publications, 2017).
Lous Martens (NL, 1940-2023) had five grandchildren for whom he created illustrated animal books. His approach began with the birth of the first baby in 2000 and continued until his death in 2023.
Made up of animal images cut from various media (newspapers, magazines, stamps, photographs, advertisements, etc.), these fascinating notebooks were published in 2017 by Roma publishing in a single volume: Animal Books - For Jaap, Zeno, Anna, Julian, Luca… The book has since enjoyed immense success and has been reprinted several times.
Come and discover the very first immersive exhibition drawn from this abundant and moving work that will dazzle young and old alike.

ExhibitionOf love & fresh waterD’amour & d’eau fraîche is a photographic series created by Clair Bravo (1999, France) within seven rural queer communities in France. The project questions the notions of belonging, visibility, intimacy, and collective life in territories often associated with conservative or heteronormative imaginaries. These communities constitute spaces of resistance, solidarity, and collective invention. Here, photography contributes to the construction of common imaginaries, to the transmission of minority experiences, and to the invention of desirable futures.
The texts that accompany the images were written by the people photographed, multiplying the points of view and sharing the authority of the narrative. Presented on silk, the photographs become objects whose lightness and mobility favor flexible circulation, outside of established frameworks.

ExhibitionThe Porcelain ShopPush open the door of the PORCELAIN SHOP!
The exhibition recounts the effervescence of a Brussels porcelain factory that ran through our country's history uninterruptedly between 1830 and 2020.
From the shop window to behind the scenes, it highlights so many human trajectories: artisans, workers, vendors, directors, clients… All of them, each in their own way, have accompanied and shaped these two centuries.
In this adventure made of (r)evolutions, each piece of porcelain becomes a witness to fashions, customs, and the major shifts in our society. From the domestic setting to public spaces, from royal commissions to mass productions up to the rise of new artistic styles, the diversity of the pieces surprises in forms and functions.
Porcelain is not what you think. Stroll through Le Magasin de Porcelaine and discover a history that is industrial, social, and deeply human all at once.
To extend the exhibition, several creations by contemporary art artisans offer a fresh perspective on fine craft and its practice, far from being obsolete.Sun 1 Nov · 10:00–17:00Musée Royal de Mariemont · Morlanwelz
ExhibitionExpo Adios Mama Carlota - A Forgotten EmpressBorn in Laeken as the first princess of Belgium and married to Archduke Maximilian of Austria, Charlotte ascended the throne as Empress of Mexico in 1864. After a compelling and tragic life, she spent the last sixty years of her life at Bouchout Castle, in the heart of what is now the Botanical Garden. Her story is one of extreme highs and lows — a history in which resilience and vulnerability are inextricably linked. These are themes that not only shaped her life, but are also more relevant than ever in our contemporary society.Sun 1 Nov · 10:00–18:00Meise Botanical Gardens

ExhibitionStudio visit May Oostvogels, Jozef Van BouwelIn the work of May Oostvogels you always feel a meditative peace. She believes that the material itself has a kind of memory and tries to bring this to life in her work.
Her style is simple and pure, and the process of creating is a teacher in itself for her. May lets the material speak for itself and focuses on the essence. Whether she uses a pencil, paintbrush, or drill, every gesture is important.
Sometimes a work arises spontaneously, sometimes precisely from a careful plan. In those planned works, logic and precision play a greater role, but always with great attention to the material.
In the previous season, we visited her husband Jaak Hillen.
You can expect a tour of her studio with a cup of coffee or tea.
