FestivalDia de MuertosConcerts, Procession, Musical workshops, Dance, Philosophy, Offerings, Fandangos, Mexican chocolate, Monumental altar, Death cafés, Offering workshops, Screening, Cemetery walk, Theater, Tales, and much more! Do not miss this must-attend event in the heart of the city
“Día de Muertos in the Marolles” has existed since 2018. It is an annual event founded by the TAS D'OS Collective based on a universal gesture yet forgotten by our contemporary societies: that of honoring our deceased. Having the Mexican tradition as a starting point, the Brussels version is a hybrid and joyful festival, the fruit of a collaboration between a collective of artists, the neighborhood residents, and audiences from wider circles.
Through singing, crafting, words, gestures, this event offers a space and a time to remember, tell stories, reinvent gestures, take care of one's dead... Alone, with family, friends, or strangers, the public finds in Día De Muertos a contemporary framework to think/heal their dead. The event, which aims to be non-confessional, open to all in a joyful and impertinent cultural exchange.
You will soon be able to discover our entire program starting October 1st.Sun 1 NovMarolles · Brussels
MiscMorning meetingsEvery first Sunday of the month we take two hours to slow down, look, listen and marvel at the nature around us.
Tijdens Ochtendontmoetingen we set out together in the nature reserve. Each time we start from a theme, not as a fixed program, but as inspiration to look differently at what lives and moves around us.
We walk slowly, follow our curiosity and make room for what presents itself along the way. Sometimes we pause at a bird call, a mushroom or an unexpected encounter. Sometimes we share experiences, stories or knowledge with each other. Sometimes we simply enjoy being outdoors.
Do not expect a classic guided walk with a pre-mapped route. Ochtendontmoetingen grow along with the group, the season and what nature shows us that morning.
It is about encounter. With nature, with each other and with everything that can surprise or touch you along the way. The slower you go, the more there is to discover.
Meeting, discovering, marveling.

MiscPopular Art Deco in the Maritime quarterThe neighborhood around the Tour et Taxis site or "Quartier Maritime" is known for its industrial past. Numerous traces of this history can still be found there: former factories, mills, and other workshops, as well as vast social housing complexes. In the Interwar period, the Foyer Molenbeekois indeed had several housing complexes built there intended for workers and employees. No garden city here, but collective apartment buildings whose architecture references Art Déco or Modernism and which are the work of architects Diongre, De Saulnier, or even Van Meulecom.Sun 1 Nov · 10:00–12:00Corner of Rue de Rotterdam and Rue du Laekenveld · Brusselsfrom €10

MiscBrussels post-brusselsization: postmodern heritageTo the north of the pentagon, Brussels is rich in postmodern architectural heritage nestled in the interstices of Brussellization. Indeed, the traumas caused by post-war functionalist urbanism motivated architectural offices, such as Atelier de Genval and Atelier d'Art Urbain, starting in the 1970s, to propose an architecture characterized by the return of decoration, the concern for the integration of the built environment into the urban fabric, and the reinvestment of old heritage.

MiscChatty tour in the world of silence… at the Brussels cemeteryAlthough located in the municipality of Evere, the Brussels cemetery is the largest. It houses the graves of many celebrities who made the history of the city or the country, just as it testifies to upsetting events of our past: wars of course, the fire of the Innovation…
A superb garden of memory, this site delights with the beauty and diversity of its tombs and its other monuments well representative of their era. MiscThe world of mushroomsSaturday 11/7/26: Le monde des champignons (Forêt de Soignes, Boitsfort)
Mushrooms are fascinating. They arrived on Earth more than 400 million years ago. They exchange nutrients with trees, and they are a source of food for slugs, insects and other animals. We will also see how mushrooms feed, what their roles are in the environment, their lifestyles and their relationships with trees.
Note: this is not a mushroom-picking activity. Under no circumstances will we gather any, and we will not specify whether they are edible or not. MiscGolden Sixties Heritage along the JunctionFrom the end of the 19th century, public authorities planned to connect the Midi Station to the North Station in order to smooth out intense rail traffic and create a station in the very heart of the city. Decided around 1904, completed in 1952, the North-Midi rail junction still constitutes to this day one of the largest construction projects Brussels has ever known. No fewer than 12,000 people were expropriated, and entire neighborhoods disappeared under the wrecking balls, causing urban trauma whose consequences are still felt today.
It was on this gaping scar that the functionalist ideal of the Golden Sixties subsequently unfolded. Along this route, a new architecture was born, dictated by triumphant modernity, monofunctionalism, and the cult of "all-for-the-car". This era has left us a legacy of remarkable modernist buildings signed by big names (Yvan Blomme, Maxime Brunfaut), whose conversion raises questions today.
A founding subject of ARAU, the Junction has been at the heart of our reflections since the association's beginnings. We therefore invite you to plunge back into the history of this pharaonic construction project to understand its aims, its challenges, its functionalist heritage, while revisiting the urban struggles and counter-projects that ARAU has spearheaded since the 70s in an attempt, according to our adage, to repair the city.Sat 7 Nov · 14:00–16:00Devant le Skatepark Chapelle, à l’angle de la rue de la Chapelle et de la rue d’Accolay · Brusselsfrom €10
MiscRight through MolenbeekWhat is today a densely built-up and lively city district once began as a modest municipality on the outskirts of Brussels. At the birth of Belgium, Sint-Jans-Molenbeek experienced rapid transformation thanks to its strategic location along the canal and close to Tour & Taxis. Industry, trade, and worker housing grew here at an unprecedented pace, making Lower Molenbeek one of the economic engines of the capital. The high demand for labor attracted migrants, first from other Belgian regions and later from abroad, who found a place here to live and work.
Decline and rebirth
In Molenbeek, which was called little Manchester, rolled cigarettes off the assembly line, wove textiles, brewed beer, and cast bronze that found its way to New York and other world cities. But after the world wars, the municipality gradually lost its economic punch. Factories closed their doors, jobs disappeared, and former prosperity made way for vulnerability. The neighborhood was confronted with outdated buildings and a changing population composition, but its industrial past remained visible in the urban structure. Warehouses, wide avenues, and compact housing blocks still tell the story of growth and decline.
Out of that period of regression grew strong resilience. Residents, local entrepreneurs, and associations gave and continue to give Lower Molenbeek a new lease on life. Old industrial sites are repurposed, social and cultural initiatives are flourishing, and the neighborhood continues to reinvent itself. This walk shows Molenbeek not as a problem neighborhood, but as a place where history, creativity, and urban renewal are in constant conversation with one another.Sat 7 Nov · 14:00–16:30Dwars door Molenbeek – brouwerijen, industrie en veerkracht langs het kanaal · Brusselsfrom €20

MiscDesire for No(o)rd: a new wind in the NoordwijkZin in No(o)rd is the result of a major renovation of WTC I and WTC II, icons of the Brusselse Noordwijk. In the nineteen-sixties, under the leadership of Paul Vanden Boeynants, the Manhattan Plan was developed here. A modern office district saw the light of day with wide avenues that invited cars right into the center of the city. The tall, impersonal towers stood literally above the social network and urban fabric and were to be connected to each other by pedestrian bridges. The original plan was only partially implemented and the new Northern Quarter became a place that never truly came to life.
Today, a new wind is blowing here between the glass towers: from closed dark buildings to more openness, mixed functions and attention to living quality. Zin in No(o)rd anchors that transformation in one powerful architectural gesture and was rewarded for this by being named World's Best Tall Building in 2025. The project also secured a spot on the longlist of the prestigious EUmies awards and on the shortlist of Brussels Architecture Prize.
Het Belpairegebouw: sustainable reconversion as a starting point
Central to the project is the Belpaire Building, which houses about 20 administrations of the Flemish government. The major renovation was conceived and executed by the architects of 51N4E in collaboration with l'AUC and Jaspers-Eyers Architects. The starting point was not a tabula rasa, but the existing structure and materials, which were preserved where possible or given a new life. That choice forms the core of the sustainable ambition: less demolition, less material consumption and a strong focus on flexibility, energy efficiency and adaptability over time. During the visit you will gain insight into how an outdated office building was transformed into a contemporary work environment.
The tour actually ends on a park high above the city, on the green roof on the 29th floor, after also visiting hotel The Standard which shares the building with the Flemish government.Wed 4 Nov · 14:00–15:30Belpaire · Brusselsfrom €15

MiscLes Marolles: the voice of modest housingIf the Marolles constitute the historical and symbolic anchor of Brussels urban struggles, they also refer to the history of ARAU and to an emblematic figure, protagonist of these struggles, the parish priest of the Marolles, Jacques Van der Biest (one of the founders of the association).
The battle of the Marolles is a popular story, with a happy ending: that of the preservation of housing and modest residents in a central neighborhood that managed to defeat real estate development and public redevelopment schemes. But History is never truly over and is always a bit more complex!
This working-class and commercial neighborhood has historically made way for embellishment programs and hygienist operations and, since the beginning of the 20th century, has welcomed various remarkable facilities and social housing complexes. The latter, from the Art Nouveau composition of the Cité sociale Hellemans (1915) to the Minimes complex, below the imposing Palais de Justice, cover very different typologies. Today, the housing blocks dating from the 1970s-80s are also the subject of renovation, with challenges regarding better integration into the urban fabric as well as adaptation to comfort and energy performance requirements. In addition, revitalization policies are still topical and divide opinion regarding the destination of space usage and public funds! Residents, committees, and associations have constantly made their voices heard so that public and private projects meet the needs of the residents and respect the identity of the neighborhood.Wed 11 Nov · 14:00–16:00Poelaertplein, on the stairs of the Palace of Justice · Brusselsfrom €10

MiscForest: Union Makes Art DecoThe Union district in Forest, located between Duden Park and Midi Station, was largely built during the Interwar period. Art Déco is omnipresent there and manifests itself in the most diverse typologies. Thus, alongside stately single-family homes and the first apartment buildings, large school complexes and a communal swimming pool emerged, while the proximity to Midi Station pushed many factories to settle in the neighborhood.
In addition to the Wielemans-Ceuppens breweries, which equipped themselves with a daring factory designed by the architect Adrien Blomme in 1930, François De Meulecom designed the Frans and Sons shoe factory in 1929, which has now been converted into housing. Le Fabriquant of art ironwork François Alexandre, an artisan awarded at Exposition de Paris in 1925, also did not hesitate to build his workshop on Avenue Van Volxem.
Finally, proof of the significant development of leisure at that time, Stade Joseph Mariën was established at the bottom of Duden Park in 1926. With its bas-reliefs representing sporting scenes, it is one of the last Art Déco football stadiums still standing in Belgium.
This visit will be an opportunity to discover this Art Déco heritage, as rich as it is unusual, and to discuss the issue of industry in the city, two flagship subjects of the year 2025 for ARAU.Fri 13 Nov · 10:00–12:00Devant l’école communale 9, 170 rue du Monténégro · Brusselsfrom €10

MiscArt Nouveau and Art Deco in SchaerbeekAt the beginning of the 20th century, the village of Schaerbeek was transformed by the creation of the prestigious avenue Louis Bertrand. A new residential and tree-lined neighborhood attracted a wealthy population that called upon the best architects of the era. Victor Horta, Gustave Strauven, François Hemelsoet or else Henri Jacobs reinvented the single-family home, the apartment building or the school complex there. A few years later, a little further on, part of the railway line connecting the quartier Léopold station to the Gare du Nord was relocated. In its place, the very beautiful avenue Paul Deschanel was created, a true repertoire of interwar architecture, between Art Déco and Modernism, single-family homes and sometimes spectacular-looking apartment buildings.Sat 14 Nov · 14:00–16:00chaussée de Haecht · Brusselsfrom €10
