Spanning more than two centuries of history, this new exhibition looks back at moments when clothing leaned towards simplicity, functionality, and naturalness. Often associated with luxury, glamour, and novelty, fashion is revealed here as a mirror of cultural and social change. A theme that, until now, has been little studied. Simplicites begins at the end of the 18th century. The philosophy of the Enlightenment, along with medical and hygienist discourse, called for a profound reform of the way people dressed. A return to nature manifested itself in a rejection of corrective artifices, new cuts, breathable materials, and an aesthetic vocabulary inspired by Antiquity. The clothing ideal became a reflection of a new lifestyle combining comfort, freedom of the body, and closeness to nature. The exhibition is divided into six chapters, each highlighting the different aspects of this simplicity. Drawn from history, the pieces shown in these thematic capsules reveal the continuity, resurgence, and paradoxes of this aesthetic. Each year, for six weeks, the artists offered workshops where the residents of Square Charles Jordens came to share their recipes: soups for Soupah!, coffees and teas for Cup of tea?, summer fruits or smoothies for Fruit me! These exchanges around food were also translated into photography: Renée Lorie and Erien Withouck took portraits of the residents, invited them to observe, experiment, and photograph themselves. They conducted interviews, drew with children, and wrote recipes on paper. The questions sparked conversations that were both difficult and joyful, revealing the realities of daily life in this social neighborhood. The exhibition is centered on Hrair Sarkissian’s monumental installation 'Stolen Past', presented in dialogue with Iconem’s immersive images of the site of Palmyra. A poignant reflection on disappearance, memory, and resilience. As cradle of ancient civilisations and major cultural crossroads, Syria has, since 2011, seen its heritage gravely threatened and exploited by war through destruction, looting, and the illegal antiquities trades. The exhibition seeks to bear witness to this ongoing tragedy while underscoring the urgent need to document sites in the face of the loss of millions of archaeological objects. 'Stolen Past', Hrair Sarkissian’s powerful installation, lies at the heart of this enquiry. Trained from an early age in his father’s photographic studio in Damascus, the artist is now recognised as one of the leading conceptual photographers of his generation. Deeply rooted in history and memory, his practice finds a particularly poignant resonance here. The monumental installation presents forty-eight lithophanes arranged like funerary stelae, creating an atmosphere of contemplation and remembrance. When illuminated, they reveal images reminiscent of black-and-white photographs depicting artefacts that disappeared from the Raqqa Museum in Syria. Founded in 1981, the institution once housed some 8,000 objects spanning a vast historical period. Between 2013 and 2017, the Islamic State took control of the city and systematically looted its museums and collections. Of these thousands of invaluable pieces, only 880 are known to remain today. By adapting a technique dating back to the mid-nineteenth century, the artist documents these absent remnants through lithophanes produced by means of 3D printing on thin translucent plaques. The project highlights the ways in which absence may be made visible, while more broadly exploring the forms of memory that emerge within communities shaped by violence. In resonance with this work, the immersive images presented in the exhibition stem from ICONEM’s 3D digitisation and reconstruction technologies, revealing the site of Palmyra in Syria, fragile under the effects of time and conflict. Through monumental remains, sculpted details, and silent expanses, visitors are invited to contemplate not only what endures, but also what has been lost. Absence here becomes a visible form, embodied in traces, ruins, and fragments that continue to tell a story. Through installations, sculptures, and visual devices, the artists focus on what remains after the fall: fragments, traces, vestiges. Here, they become a form of language, making it possible to address the memory of places and the way in which materials—mineral, organic, or industrial—bear the marks of time. Scenography occupies an important place in the project. Some installations adopt forms or principles derived from architecture: columns, alignments, structures, while others appear as fragments dispersed in space. This tension between organization and disorder creates a balance, evoking simultaneously a construction site, an archaeological site, or a landscape after a collapse. Far from being a picturesque ruin, it sometimes embodies a passage of modernity, a continuous movement of destruction and chaos that engenders transformation. This dystopian form, widely present in literature and video games, opens up reflection and invites us to consider this imaginary as an aesthetic source. This performance stems from the many questions people have about their family structure and their ambition to question what is ‘normal’. Meticulously, the four performers build ever-changing body sculptures in the viewing frames. Bodies intertwine, hang from and climb on the frames, walk upside down, and defy both gravity and your imagination. Perspectives tilt and physical logic seems to disappear.
